Reader’s Scoop: Teachers, Please Stop The Homework Before Pesach

Dear teachers and/or school principals. This homework before Pesach has got to stop. I opened my son’s back-pack last night to find a regular homework schedule. I don’t think 10 days before Pesach is the time to start giving homework assignments. We all know homework is as much of a pressure to the parents as it is for the children, and for parents to have to stop Pesach work to sit down to 15 minutes of homework for each kid, is too much to ask for during this time of year.

I don’t complain about the the day-to-day homework loads, but during the Pesach season, a child’s priorities should be to assist their parents with Pesach-related chores.

A parent.

  1. number 1
if you cant find any words in the websters dictionary to say something nice (moderated) !
i never understand how people just say negative comments the whole day….

  2. I agree with number 1. Why should they not have homework because of a holiday? It’s not like you are being asked to go out side and play with your kids.

  3. I think there should never be homework. I never had and seemed to turn out ok. Working these kids to death doesnt seem to have produced better kids than we had when I was young (the only thing it seems to have increased in that there are more kids at risk).

  4. A parent runs the home, a teacher the classroom.

I suppose if you look for a reason you will always find one. Now you say Pesach, now it’s too late, and now you must go to a wedding and your kid cant cope.

All you seem to do is be Michanech a child to escape their responsbility.

I would suggest that if you can find a tutor older sibling or friend of your child’s to to help when you can not. (I think you should find someone to help you as well- but that is beyond the scope of this comment.)

Or send your child with a respectfully written note asking the teacher to allow your child to complete his homework during school time and to provide him/her with the help needed.

Never use a D’var Ruchnie as an excuse or escape.

  5. to number 8 what do you mean that these kids have more time off then most. our boys start school in the end of august and go until july
the girls go from sept. to june
everytime we have off its because of a holiday

  6. to 1,3 ,4 ,5 ,7 ,8 please give me a break either you have no kids or they are to young to have homework as a teacher and a proud parent there is a proper time for homework and here is a time not to give homework

  7. I look forward to homework. It’s the only chance we get to see how the children are really performing in school, if there’s a struggle or extra assistance needed. The teachers still have to show up every day to work before Pesach – why should their efforts be wasted? Homework is necessary. I always had it and it cemented my learning. Yes, it’s inconvenient. We’re all rushed, shopping, cleaning, cooking like crazy. It’s my unsolicited opinion that as long as they are in school, they get homework. Maybe not a day or two before the chag, but only then so they might help prepare.

  8. Why does this town always like taking the easy way out? Who ever heard of girls having off so long before the holiday? That is not teaching them responsibility. Teaching responsibility is being able to manage school (with homework) and helping your parents at the same time. That’s what I had in high school, and you don’t see me complaining …

  9. I VERY NICELY WROTE A NOTE TO THE TEACHER SAYING I AM SORRY BUT I CAN NOT DO H.W WITH MY CHILD UNTIL AFTER PESACH. THOSE WHO HAVE TIME KOL HAKOVOD. EVERYONES STRESS LEVEL IS DIFFERENT AND EVERYONE KNOWS IF THEY HAVE TIME TO DO H.W OR NOT. ALL MY CHILDREN B’H HELP ME CLEAN FOR PESACH SO THAT IS WHY I DON’T HAVE TIME OR I SHOULD SAY MY CHILDREN DON’T HAVE TIME TO DO H.W

  10. Homework should be stopped, PERIOD. My kids are in school all day, then they come home and they need to study for another hour??? What the heck?

  11. maybe that why lakewood has a 37% failure rate…
    shame on you..

learning is a life long experience, You never stop learning. The kids should be taught responsibility not laziness ,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  12. I am a teacher I like giving home work. Its the way the parent’s know how their kinderlach are doing in scool. No one ever ate chametz on Pesach because of home work. That’s the true Emes! (Doesn’t Emes mean true!)
