Readers’ Scoop: Nosh Nosh And Nosh

Readers-Scoop-Logo smallTo whom this may concern. While we are on the topic of buses, I would like to bring up an issue which I see was also mentioned in one of the comments in a recent article about the buses. The issue which I believe should be addressed by principals, is the issue of Nosh given out by bus drivers. My son has come home on several occasions with a Nosh saying the kids received them from their bus driver. I’m sure the Hechsher is fine, and I understand that they like to be friendly and it may encourage proper behavior on the bus, but I don’t think Nosh is something most parents appreciate.

And it’s not just from bus drivers, but also in school itself.

I think the Nosh situation is getting a bit out of hand these days, and I’m not one of those overprotective parents. But with today’s obesity rate, perhaps with cutting down on the Nosh is a good start.

Thank you.

  1. well as a bus driver I can tell you I never have nor will I ever hand out nosh to anyone of the kids. FIrst off I have no idea if your child has a an allergy, second and most importantly if you child starts to choke on something that they are eating, it’s always not so easy to pull the bus over in a safe spot to help. It’s not just the schools or some bus driver’s it’s the parents themselves sending the kids on the bus with a baggy full of cereal in the morning.

  2. There is a bigger issue here. To frendly is a problem! you really have no clue why he realy gave your kid candy. Next time he will invite your kid over to his house to watch tv and more candy ……. THIS MUST STOP.

  3. If you are concerned and really want to do something about it – contact your school! Sounding off way make you feel good, but all it will do is generate ‘hock’ and produce nothing. (And yes, I agree, the nosh is way out of hand!)

  4. as a teacher in a local school were the chidren need quick incentives to behave nosh is the only answer its appealing to the children and very inexpensive if u as a parent have something else thats cheap and will do the same job i would be very happy to hear but for now nosh which can be a 1 cent is the best incentive unfortunaley sorry

  5. Yes, it’s weird if a bus driver gives nosh, but teacher’s need some inncentive, should we give out apples and carrot sticks? or maybe baseball cards n movies? Not really sure what the author wants here.

  6. we need the incentive to get the children to stay in their seats and not be bouncing off the walls from the sugar high they get in school, so we can get them home safely, and not have to pull over 2 minutes to get them to sit down.

  7. Nosh in general is an issue, I agree. You can use other incentives just as easily (although they might be a tad more expensive). However, the bigger issue here is the relationship between the driver and the students. What is a driver’s job? It is to drive the children to and from school safely. If there is an issue with safety, then they need to address it with the school and parents. However, giving out candy or even prizes for that matter, creates a relationship of a friend which is not the relationship a child should have with the bus driver. My boys have an incredible driver this year- all he says to the kids is “good morning” and “sit down in your seat”. Otherwise he does his job, and the kids do their own thing.

  8. Teachers #4 and #5 you should be ashamed of yourselves. Don’t you think that it would be appropriate for you to reread your comments before submitting them?. Maybe that way you would catch some of your many spelling mistakes, and improper sentences. How do expect the children to ever learn to write if they see this from somebody bold enough to sign him/her self as a teacher. Maybe that’s the education problem. The children see that the teacher doesn’t care so why should they. Forget about the nosh.

  9. I cannot speak for all drivers but I do not give out food or drinks to students I transport. As a matter of fact it is against the law and company policy for students to eat on a school bus. I am confident that the problem does not lay with the majority of the drivers but with the schools and parents. When we pick up your children in the morning they get on the bus with breakfast, hot chocolate, snacks, etc., when we pick them up in the afternoon they get on the bus with soda, cookies, crackers, snacks, even donuts. If I see it I ask them to throw it out or put it in their bag but many of them sneak it on the bus and then throw it on the floor, its disgusting and disrespectful. Not just disrespectful to me but to the children riding after should I not have time to clean the bus between runs. This readers driver may have given out food and they were wrong to do so but parents and schools are far greater offenders and need to correct this.
