Dear TLS, I just wanted to make people aware that the new traffic pattern at MLK and Pine has some unintended consequences. I was just driving there tonight; making a left from Pine onto MLK. After I made the turn, in the darkness and rain, I narrowly avoided hitting someone walking in the street. The northbound lane over there is very narrow and people might be used to walking on the shoulder (which is no longer there).
I’m not looking to complain about anything, I just want people to be aware of the new situation, and to avoid walking on that stretch. In addition, drivers should be more aware as people get used to the new driving patterns.
The only other thing I would recommend is for the “No Parking” area to be extended further down the street (maybe 20-30 feet), because it’s a tight fit when someone is parked over there.
Thank you.
Can I suggest that you report this to public works or the police through proper channels? WHile it is possible they read TLS I think you will get a much smoother response if you talk to the authorities.
My thoughts exactly!
People should new aware there is no shoulder anymore, and the no parking should be extended.
“new” should read “be”
notify the township please
Why are people walking on the street? I’m just a few steps away to the side and meant for people to walk on. The street is for cars, I’m for people so go ahead and walk all over me.
They must put turning lane from pine on to mlk asap!
I was hoping someone would bring this up.
You are 100% right that they should extend the no parking because it’s pretty narrow, i think the two southbound lanes (both turning lanes) don’t need to be as wide as they are now and they should make the other lane which is too narrow wider. Don’t wait God forbid for an accident!!
I really hope someone from the township sees this and will rectify it.
there is a sidewalk right there!
where is the promised trafic light?
Since we are on this topic, many might might not be aware
It is ILLEGAL to drive on the shoulder for any reason and if caught you will get a ticket and 4 points on your license. This means that if the car in front of you is waiting to turn left, you CANNOT pass him on the right shoulder. The shoulder is made for pedestrians, cyclists, disabled vehicles and emergency vehicles. Many areas in this town lack sidewalks, so the shoulders are frequently used by pedestrians.
DO NOT DRIVE ON THE SHOULDER for any reason. In the eyes of the law, it is no different than driving on the sidewalk to get around a waiting car.
Thank you
when pedestrians wear black at night or in bad weather, it makes it very hard for motorists to see them. wear a reflective belt or better yet- stop walking in the road and use the sidewalks! wasnt there an article a week ago how the town wants to put in more sidewalks? whats the point if no one uses them and just walks in the street?
It’s interesting these two comments were posted consecutively. 10 says the shoulder is made for pedestrians and 11 is criticizing the pedestrian for walking on, what he thought was, the shoulder of the road.
I know you didn’t mean it that way but it’s telling. Never a lack of criticism.
The no parking on Pine street should not be extended it should be enforced, there are cars parked in the no parking area all the time. Maybe can’t read or think it doesn’t mean them.
I do see your point but mine has nothing to do with criticism. Now let me clear this up for you-
If there is a sidewalk, like by the intersection mentioned in this article, then use it!!
If there are not sidewalks, it’s obvious you need to walk in the shoulder of the road (granted you do it in a safe manner).
Either way, make sure you are following all pedestrian laws and safety guidelines and please wear something reflective! Although we know it is illegal to pass someone on the shoulder, people still do it and wont see you walking there until it’s too late!
Either way- people need to start using the sidewalks! I can not count the number of times i see on a daily basis women pushing baby strollers down the road while a empty sidewalk sits right beside them! Hopefully it wont take a tragedy to make people use common sense!
i’m sorry i meant to say i’m #11, not #10
why does the crossing guard stand outside Forest Park on Pine ave ?
would it not be more benificial if he/she stood at corner of MLK and pine until they get Traffic light
Quit complaining that the roads are too narrow, I drive a truck on these streets and they are perfectly fine! Learn how to stay in ur lane and would wont have any problems!
Dear Mr. Mayor, Street lights -well done, Next task, please open Vine Street between Cedar Bridge and Pine to alleviate some of the traffic in this area.
they must open Arlington what type of chutzpa that they make the robim suffer
Santa Claus WILL be delivering the temporary traffic light for a christmas present.
maybe everyone in lakewood needs to take the driving test for their selves again
You can extend the no parking zone for the entire length of pine street for what it matters. Just look at the signs at the intersection on pine street. They clearly state that there is no parking. Clear and simple. But, its not heeded nor enforced.
As far as driving on the shoulder, yes its a 4 pt ticket, but if the officer wants, he can also write for careless driving which is a 2 pt in addition.
Laws are written, but unless followed or enforced, we as a society are doomed.
how would u like if we opened your street to thru traffic ? especially if its not wide enough for two cars to pass, when there are parked cars on the street.
they shoud make a proper turning lane on mlk to pine and a proper lane coming off of pine to mlk by using a traffic light the traffic is rediculus and and its to conjested or just make it a one way
Hey dre
The streets in Lakewood were never designed for the amount of traffic on them, so fixes have to be made. The fixes are not always good but are better than nothing. The bottom line is NO NEW construction should be allowed until a real traffic study done AND ALL roads impacted by the new construction be evaluated not just the ones in front of the development as done now. I was at the Planning board meeting when the board was told by a developers traffic adviser that ‘this construction on Pine Street would NOT add to the traffic on Pine Street’.
