Reader-submitted: Lock Your Wi-Fi

reader submitted To whom this may concern. I’m writing this as an important awareness issue which I’m hoping will bring about some change.

This past week I drove around my block to check the unlocked Wi-Fi connections in the area, and what I found was quite surprising. There were numerous wireless networks unlocked, available for anyone to access at any time.

Besides for the security aspect of it, it’s a tremendous Achrayus on the Internet-owner.

In fact, a couple weeks back I came out of my home one night and found a young boy just standing in my neighbor’s driveway. When I asked him if there was anything I can help with, he responded, “no, I’m just using the Internet.”

I’m hoping those who lack passwords on their networks take this matter seriously, and take the proper precautions.

Thank you.

  1. Yanky. Are you the kid in the driveway? Cuz you sure sound like it! What’s wrong if someone gives a suggestion l’tovas harabim? Why do you have a need to always smack down commenters?
I bet you’re the one that when told, “Have a great day”, you’d yell back, “Don’t you tell me what kind of a day to have !” CHILL OUT!!

  2. It’s a losing battle
There are so many free open wifi spots in the velt
    That they’ll just find another
The only true answer is we must strengthen our youth (and adults )
    From within

  3. optimum is offering free wireless routers. what they dont tell you is that any optimum member can then sign on in your area through your wireless wifi.

  4. Thanks its very true, people should really take this seriously, the internet is extremely dangerous we must take every step possible to avoid any disasters it could bring R’L

  5. This is nothing new. I wonder who doesn’t secure their wifi now adays? We have three layers to block our wifi signal. It shows any attempted hits and who from.

  6. Thanks for posting. Would you leave your front door open so anyone could steal your personal stuff and use your appliances 24/7 while being invisible to you no less?

  7. As an added precaution, when you do lock it, make sure you create a new passkey, rather than use your router’s default key. Best would be to lock routers down completely and only allow access to specific devices (MAC addresses) – TAG should be able to help with this. That way, any unregistered device will not be able to connect to your router.

  8. i agree with the letter writer. parents are trying to shelter their kids and make it harder for them to access inappropriate sites, but here go their own neighbors make it really easy and free! please take it into consideration…Thank you!

  9. This is a really a necessity not just good advice, maybe it will stop the couple who sits in their car in my alleyway from continuing to do so.

  10. How many times have I spotted cars late at night park in some public driveway and guys watching who knows what on open connections. True there always a spot that will be open. But why make it an easy opption…

    thanks.

  11. C’mon everyone. I’m no goody goody myself, but all the man did was write a respectful letter to increase public awareness. no bashing no holier than thou if you cant handle even that then……

  12. to the writer of this letter and to all i feel that sheltering your kids to much and not giving them any access to internet is what causes them to have to go out and find unlocked routers or go to the library and do whatever they feel like!!! if you give your kid access at home but monitor it and make sure they are only going to sites that you know are kosher then they wont feel the need to go out in the cold or rain or even nice weather to find unlocked wifi!!!

  13. @Ron Benvenisti “JR’, you sound like a nice person, be careful about who you post as, you can easily get yourself in big trouble with the Feds. Sleep well buddy, a bunch of folks in blue nylon jackets might ask for your driver’s license at sunrise. Just sayin’…

  14. I just want to be clear that I have no personal beef with Ron Benvenisti “JR’. It’s just that the profile of someone who posts under another identity is generally not pretty and a locked router will not prevent you or your kids from being scammed or worse by someone using these techniques. You will also get banned from all social media sites and have everything you ever write and do analyzed to see just what you might be into.

NO PASSWORD, ROUTER OR SOFTWARE WILL EVER BE A SUBSTITUTE FOR BEING AN ACTIVE PARENT!
