Dear Editor, Please see attached photo of one of the glasses in my menorah on the eighth day of Chanukah. Boruch Hashem I noticed it and put it out before a tragedy occurred.
Am I the only one who is noticing the lack of quality in these products that are sold regularly in our stores? I personally know of a few cases where paraffin shabbos licht glasses exploded, melted Chanukah glasses, candles with double wicks and other scary situations. (I would also mention the numerous kids who have ingested paraffin oil from containers with no child proof lids or warning labels.)
I was wondering if it’s possible to find out are there any sort of quality controls put into place by these manufacturers? Is anyone taking achrayus for these products that are being marketed on a mass scale to the frum community? How many tragedies will we have to see in the frum community R”L before something is done?

you didn’t use the original wic that came with the plastic cup improper use by איבערחכמים creates terrible danger people who dont wish to think are responsible for a lot of problems and if im not mistaken it says on the package only to use prginal wic that came with cup and not replacement pipes
The cup to the left was the same shape as the one to the right ? Was the wick stem straight in the middle and it still melted the cup ?

Thank you for bringing up this dangerous situation to the public. As you have suggested, we don’t need R’L tragedies in order to make dangerous products used by the general Jewish community safe! The cost of human tragedy is too high a price for companies to risk pennies to make items safe!

Warning: Never purchase chanukah oil cups made out of plastic! They melt. One can report defective products to the CPSC (consumer product safety commission). They have a website which you can list a product that should be subject to recall or sanctions. Likely, these products are made in China by 3rd party manufacturers and distributed by frum companies.
why is this lakewood news? if you have an issue with a product why dont you call the company or take it back to the store?
It’s not an issue with a specific product, what’s being bought up is maybe a general lack of responsibility…
No one will do anything unless a tumult is made.This is a respectable tumult; it’s saying ‘we have nothing against the manufacturers, but it’s not practical to sell plastic cups and then say you can only use it with a certain wick’. Even if it come with the wick, but people wash them out, and reuse them the next year. This happened to me too. B”H there was no issue, so I didn’t say anything, but it’s probably not safe to use plastic cups, and they should probably not be sold. TY

I’m quite sure even when we used a metal pipe (that holds the wick to the top) it melted, as the pipe leaned against the plastic.
Or 2 days yartseit lights sold before yom tov in all frum sores in plastic containers?
Yes, we were stupid enough to try it and it did melt! We ended putting the candle in a bowl of water.
As others have mentioned, make sure your cups are glass and not plastic. Also, it’s important to use a wick holder pipe that extends above the top of the cup so the flame is above the cup, not inside it.
There is no pipe holder in that last cup. If you do not use it right please don’t blame the manufacturer.
