Reader-submitted: Garbage centers

Dear Residents of Lakewood,

As the open garbage centers begin, I ask everyone to please, please be considerate of those who live around the area. It is so upsetting to have our kids woken up over and over by loudly dragging garbage in middle of the night. There is no need to make so much noise at 2 A.M. Please also avoid honking unless it is absolutely necessary.

As a side note, I think we need to evaluate why these dumps are open in residential areas between the hours of 12 A.M- 6 A.M. This means we need to pay workers overtime for many hours for the few who choose to dump their garbage at those times. This money comes from our hard earned taxpayer’s money. I wish this service could be done with more chachmah and consideration.

For those who will write that I am ungrateful for this service, I welcome you to sleep in our guest room for the week before Pesach before you comment.

A Chag Kasher V’Sameach to all.

  1. I agree with letter write. It’s nice that they open these extra garbage places but why do they need to be open such crazy hours. They should be open until 12:00 am. That’s plenty of time for people to get there stuff there.
Also there is no reason for people to have their kids sitting in back of van holding cans its very dangerous. Find another way to get your garbage to sites.

  2. Little me, relax. The kids love it, and it’s something they do once a year. Its dangerous, but so is texting while driving, skydiving and crossing the street. Give them a little fun

    • The kids love it and its only once a year but all it takes is one time for someone to get hurt and their life will be changed forever.
There are many things that are dangerous so does that mean doing it once is OK.

  3. While I completely understand your frustration and agree that these drop offs should be located in nearby non- residential areas, I would like to explain something. While you apparently are able to get all your shopping, cleaning, etc done by 12, for many of us who are not able to even start until 5:00 or 6:00 or 7 pm (and then stopping for an hour or so to get kids into bed,) working through the nights before Pesach sometimes become necessary, hence people dealing with garbage removal at 2:00 am or even later. That’s not to say they should do so noisily, it’s just to explain why these centers are open all night and why it is indeed necessary for many people to avail themselves of these drop off locations at all hours of the night.

  4. Definitely agree that everyone going at those hours should be considerate. As far as the times, I wholeheartedly disagree. There are many people who end up running extremely late and this is really a lifesaver for them. If you’d research I’m sure you’ll be surprised at how many cars are in line at 2am. Obviously when someone is waiting in line at that time, they must be considerate and QUIETLY wait for their turn.

  5. also, i dont think it is really dangerous. if you drive slowly.
p.s. it would be really appreciated if the PUBLIC WORKS dept would come around to an extra pickup before passover.
Why would they have these drop off centers and then ticket you for bringing your trash cans there in the only possible way? in reality, how are we supposed to get out trash there other than have our kids hold them while we drive? walk each trash can 1 mile and back? then they would have to be open til 4:00 am

    • If you spread out a disposable plastic tablecloth in your car you can put the trash bags in there without worrying that they will spill while you are driving. Please use common sense and don’t throw your brains out with your chometz!

  6. Why do you need to roll your cans there just inspect your bags (double bag it if necessary) and put it in your car. And especially for all the mini van drivers (btw are most of the vehicles pulling cans) have plenty of room for it (put down your seats).

  7. dudes! the squirrels have already ripped holes in the bags and all the guts are hanging out! that is why I cannot put them in my car!!!!!

  8. The real answer is why can’t DPW come around and collect the garbage like every other normal town and city does on erev Pesach??????
I can’t imagine that it is costing them much less if less at all to have all those trucks sitting idle in all the different locations. Trucks are left running therefore using gas……each location has minimum 3 employees working the trucks…..,you have all the extra lighting cones etc put out to make dropping off garabage more efficient…….so seriously what is the real reason not to have the same garbage trucks being driven by same DPW employees using the same gas just do their regular zone routes to just pick up the garbage ?????
It makes a whole lot more sense is much safer and not to mention more convenient

  9. Can Someone explain why we can’t make everyones life easier and instead of making the whole town crazy to bring their trash to these locations just have the same workers that work overtime just drive the truck and make more trash pickups than the usual once a week trash pickup and shalom al yisroel [like they do in Brooklyn]
