Read The ‘Fine Print’ Before Signing Up With JCP&L Easy Green Program

ThermostatBEWARE: If you have been thinking about signing up with JCP&L’s latest Easy Green program, be sure to read the information prior to signing up. The program, is an energy management program offered by JCP&L to its customers in selected areas, designed to reduce the level of energy needed on the hottest days of the year to prevent outages. The incentive for the customer to sign up, is a $50 dollar gift certificate.

What you should know is, which some have learned the hard way, that EasyGreen manages your central air conditioner with a small sensor connected to your central air conditioning unit and a sensor that plugs into an outlet near your thermostat, inside your home, to helpe reduce your electric bill during the hottest days of the year, while staying within your chosen program level.

Here’s the ‘catch’. On the 10 to 20 hottest days, when regional energy consumption is high, EasyGreen will be activated and the temperature inside your home will increase to the level you agreed to. Which means, you will not be able to lower the temperature below that agreed upon temperature.

  1. I know many who fell for it and were suffering from it on shabbos… It doesn’t let u make the thermostat lower than 76 on a hot day.

  2. I live out of town and am part of a very similar program. I signed up because I got an expensive thermostat for free, that can be set via computer even when I am away from home.

Although they can change your air conditioning settings a couple of degrees on very hot days, on my system I can bypass their change. If I see on the screen that they are controlling my settings, I could change it back and push “HOLD”. This overrides their control.

The only issue would be is if they would “take you over” on Shabbos. This has never happened to me and I have had this for a few years already.

In fact, they almost never take me over anyway. And the one or two times that they did, if not for this system, there would have been a black-out anyway.

  3. Its a non issue if you know before because the piece that plugs in your home next to the thermostst, if you unplug it everything works like before so you dont loose control, the only time you loose control is if you forget to unplug it before shaboss. i verified it with the guy who signed me up he said very clearly you dont want it? just unplug it so no reason to get all scared over this. there is one downside to it though inside the piece that plugs into your home there a tiny camera and jcp&l can see everthing you do so if that makes you uncomfortable you might not want to sign up

  4. Why would jcpl want to give you money if you can control or override their system?? You want to keep your bills down, turn off the ac!

  5. of course there are outages in lakewood, every new home built has to have 7 zone AC, so each room can have its own comfort level. We are living in golus and yet we must live like kings with our granite countertops 5 bathrooms, and “affordable” townhouses starting at only $499,000

  6. I signed up for it… and so did most of my friends on high street… we’ve had no problems… and there’s nothing like $50 bucks for free

  7. I signed up for the easy green program in May. The gentlemen that came to my door was very nice and knowledgeable. We went through the entire summer and did not feel any effects of the program. The only thing I did notice is that I saved $76 dollars on my bill and we did not have any power outages unlike the the previous summer.

  8. This unit works just like it said in the flyer. I just got mine installed about 2 months ago and haven’t noticed any difference in my home. I can say no black outs for 2 months now! 🙂

  9. This program is excellent! I must say that I noticed a decrease in the amount that I pay monthly during the summer months. JCP&L really takes care of us and never gave us a problem. Highly recommend it!

  10. This is just too funny! Camera in the sensor? lol…!!! Not a chance! This system is all about supply and ddemand of electricity and keeping you from having blackouts. Over ride the system? Are you a thief? You accepted the contract so live with it as it’s keeping your lights on. I live in Pa. and we have it on our two compressors and so far it hasn’t even beem used this summer. Used the hottest 10-20 days? That’s no more than a worst case guess by the electric companies! The system monitors supply and demand on the grid and if the two come close to each other the system can turn off tens of thousands of central air units clients have signed up to keep your grid from crashing. The inside sensor takes the temperature immediately upon the E/G system going on and allows, if necessary, a rise of as much as 6 degrees in the house but generally the grid will turn your central air back on before 6 degrees not the inside sensor. The system is most likely to be used on days of repeated high temps. We had 107 degrees here a couple Fridays ago and the system did not go on. If we had had two or three such days surely it would have.

Why do people always tend to make up such things they know little to nothing about?
