PSE&G, New Jersey’s largest utility company, is proposing to the Board of Public Utilities an increase of $54.52 in electric rates annually and an increase of $76.94 for natural gas customers, a report in NorthJersey.com said. The utility company, which serves more than 2.1 million customers, said the nation’s economic woes and complaints about billing errors because of a different computer system mean that it needs more funds to operate safely and reliably, according to the report. The increases would bring the annual price for the average electric customer to $1,500 and the gas-heat customer to $1,410, the report said. PSE&G, which is holding three public hearings, wants to increase the rates by the end of March. Star Ledger.
