PSA: New Initiative Launched to Elevate WhatsApp Usage

WhatsApp, the popular messaging app, is used by many in the frum community for personal use, business use, for family group chats, for Shul Zmanim, for sharing photos and videos and the like.

Like everything in life, WhatsApp can be used positively, or misused and abused harmfully.

As Torah observant Jews, we must always choose the positive path! We must choose the path that elevates us and causes Kiddush Hashem.

To that end, a new initiative has been launched to help channel WhatsApp usage in a positive direction, and elevate the WhatsApp platform into a vehicle for Kiddush Hashem!

There are a plethora of WhatsApp groups that offer Torah- oriented content. Everything from Parsha, Tefilah, Mussar, Chesed, Simcha, Bitachon, Yiras Shomayim, Yahrtzeits, Gedolim pictures , Halacha, Hashkafa, Jewish history, stories of Tzadikim, inspirational clips etc. is available. There are groups geared for men and groups for women, there are groups with recorded shiurim and groups with written content, there are groups with short bursts of content and groups with lengthier series. There are shiurim in English, Yiddish, Hebrew and many other languages. There is something for everyone! The issue is that many people do not know about a lot of these groups, and they have no way to join them!

The new initiative aims to collect many of these various WhatsApp groups, and make them available in one place, on one website, so that the groups can easily be found and be available for all WhatsApp users to join the ones that they feel will help them with their personal growth.

Moshe B., who recently signed up for a few of these WhatsApp shiurim, had this to say: “I used to waste so much time on WhatsApp with senseless things. Ever since I joined a few of these groups, it has transformed my day and my life. Whenever I want to ‘wind down’ for a few minutes, instead of watching or listening to things that are not productive – to put it mildly – now I do something that helps my spiritual growth!”

Many others have expressed similar sentiments.

Instead of wasting so much time with silly memes, questionable status posts, off-color humor, divisive politics, damaging Lashon Hara and forbidden images,  you can now use WhatsApp for content befitting the children of Hashem!

The initiative just recently got off the ground and is in its infancy. The plan is to iy”H keep adding groups and links to make even more positive content available to an even broader audience.

  1. Very nice initiative. I’m looking for a way to pause Whatsapp during specific pockets of time. Like that it’s locked from 1-2pm daily unless u put In a code. If anyone has a tip to do this on an android, please post here.

  2. I wouldn’t quite call this a PSA. There are a couple assertions herein that while they may seem innocuous to many daily users of this site, I believe many within the community would find controversial.

  3. To “Serious”. seriously?! Obviously, those who can manage without WhatsApp altogether is great! But for those who do use the app, it’s a great PSA, as it’s a method to help keep their usage positive and kosher! No need to seek and find controversy in everything!

    Mi K’amcha Yisrael!

  4. Ty tls for posting about issues that are interesting and beneficial to the community! I recently saw some criticism about tls ignoring hype that is of little interest for the average community member – i disagree with that sentiment. This is an example of something that the average person can immensely appreciate and benefit from

  5. I try to be careful about the groups I join limiting them to work, family, or community related. If anyone else has any ideas how to alleviate the channels so there isn’t inappropriate information coming through, I would greatly app it.
