PHOTOS: Protestors Call Kapporas Minhag “Barbaric” Despite Findings that Prove Otherwise

kaporas protestPHOTO: Animal rights groups were in Lakewood again for their yearly visit to protest what they call a “Barbaric” Minhag Yisroel, despite the fact that according to health officials the chickens are transported and slaughtered in a very humane way.

“This barbaric custom is practiced by a small group of ultra orthodox Jews,” the animal rights group wrote in an email.

Barbaric? Try again.

In fact, according to reports, the method of transporting, as well as slitting the chicken’s throat with an extremely sharp knife that causesĀ it to bleed out extremely fast and then placing it in cones, is used by backyard chicken keepers, homesteaders, and family farmers all over the U.S.

But despite the facts and findings, the protestors seem to find it “tormenting the chickens” when they are held up to perform a ritual done for thousands of years.

protest kapporas“APLNJ is not opposed to the Kaporos ritual, but we ARE opposed to the use of chickens in the ritual,” the organization wrote.

One Kapporas performer responded, “this has been going on for thousands of years, and as long we’re performing this ritual in a legal and humane manner, we won’t be stopping it any time soon.”

  1. Just for the record a butcher told me that if you place your finger between the wings of the chicken when holding it, it allows them to breathe and keeps them calm. Otherwise when ppl hold them by the wings it restricts their breathing, that’s why they are always making so much noise.

  2. You want to know what is barbaric? Not Kapporos but making Rt 9 traffic even worse than it already is by standing on the corner and making a ruckus causing rubbernecking

  3. Why we don’t see them in front of (moderated) clinic’s protecting!!!
Today people care more about animals then humans.
(and I’m a person that likes having pets/animals)
Crazy world we are living in.

  4. As they we’re protesting a 20 something yr old girl overdosed on drugs and died in downtown lakewood. I was in the convenience store on cedar bridge and saw a man drinking an alcohol beverage and obviously high as he cared for his young daughter. There are 80 murders a day in the US. The lakewood high school has had drug busts on premises!! Students there have been involved in armed robberies.

These anti semites on route 9 should be involved in shaping up their own communities before coming in and lecturing us about a tradition of putting a chicken over our head once a year.

If they cared about life let’s see them protest in front of (moderated) that sells drug paraphanelia year round. Let them volunteer at the high schools to keep their kids off of crime.

My point is there is so much craziness out there going on. If all they see as a problem is people doing a small tradition once a year as a massive problem they are obviously anti semites looking for hate. They should be ashamed of themselves and should immediately apologize for their disgusting behavior.

  5. Lakewooder: Just because someone doesn’t agree with something that is happening in your community does not make them an anti-semite. That term is being thrown around way too much lately.

  6. The reason why I called them flat out what they are is because enough beating around the bush.

There are so many parents messing up their kids and families with drugs and alcohol. I heard about a court case going on in NJ where both parents don’t want custody. These are massive issues to worry about and to work on. To find one small tradition that you don’t agree with that occurs once a year and put up signs and make protests is nothing short of anti semitic.
I am ready to hear otherwise, please explain.

  7. There’s no better word than anti-Semite When people go hunting and injure animals because they try to kill it then they had better name and the animal suffers nobody cares, but when we take a chicken what we do this once a year for about a week and slaughter the chicken properly, they come with their issues. They’re anti-Semites. Yes I’ll say it again, they’re Jew haters.
