Pregnant women, babies and young children should not drink from crystal glasses, Dr. Mendel E. Singer, Ph.D. and Director of the Jewish Community Health Initiative in Cleveland tells TLS. Additionally, crystal decanters should only store beverages during the Seder or meal.“Crystal usually contains between 24%-32% lead oxide, a substance toxic in very small amounts”, Dr. Singer says. “When liquids sit in crystal glasses or a decanter they leach lead from the glass. Wine stored in a crystal decanter for 1 day will have about double the lead the government allows in drinking water. After 10 days, it is 10 times the legal limit.”
Some china and stoneware have a lead-based glaze and can cause lead poisoning as well, Dr. Singer says.
“This is particularly true for china and stoneware that are highly decorated, hand crafted, or very old. These should not be used on a regular basis, and should be thrown out if there is any deterioration of the glaze.”
Acute lead poisoning from a brief exposure can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea says Dr. Singer. Severe complications are rare.
“Low levels of lead exposure in pregnant women is associated with low birth weight and premature delivery, and affects neurodevelopment of the fetus, leading to lower IQ, impairment in hearing and motor development, and increases in learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders.”
“Low levels of lead can cause subtle effects on the intellectual development of infants and children. Infants and toddlers are highly susceptible due to their rapid development and their higher rates of absorption of lead.”
Dr. Singer adds, that most children do not show any signs or symptoms of lead exposure, but repeated low level exposures cause lead to accumulate in the body over months and years. TLS.
what next? a bissel bitochon, shomer pesim etc and chill out!
#1 are you really not embarresed to write that???? we are dealing with poison here and if there is a chance you might get affected wouldn’t common sense dictate that you take necessary measures?
so far fetched
How can it affect their pregnancy?
Quote “so far fetched”
Not really
Anything dangerous in silver?
It looks like #1 already had too much lead…
Thats why I preffer red solo cups…j/k.
Were these studies done by the same scientists that brought us global warming??
Don’t worry too much. By the time the lead affects anyone, global warming will have already destroyed the world. I mean global cooling. I mean climate change.
is it any liquid cuz there are many drinks that are sold in glass bottles
The moral of this story is…
DRINK UP!
Don’t store alcohol -Finish it till the last drop 🙂
On a more *serious* note – Thank you for publishing this article. It never hurts to gain a little more knowledge. If one is skeptical about any subject, here’s your chance to do a little research on your own. Hashem gave us a brain. An organ that craves knowledge, and intellectual activity. Pesach is nearly upon us. Before posting your opinions, think about the 4 sons. Which son do you strive to emulate?
I drink straight from the bottle!!!
Guess What:I must give credit to my local grocery store!!! They took off the shelves all Crystal Glasses …just like they discarded the St.Moritz bottles…
Seriously? Read the article it says CRYSTAL. Glass and crystal are not one and the same, my friend.
Ironically, further clinical lab tests have shown if u wash the Crystals prior to use w/ St Moritz, it actually negates the seepage of lead & makes the glasses safe to drink from. Especially if u smoke w/ a baby in the car. Go figure. DB
