Pothole-filling During the Winter a Never-ending Task

pothole 2-15If you haven’t seen potholes around town, chances are you felt them. And with the relentless frigid winter temperatures, don’t expect them to disappear anytime soon.

Potholes form when moisture collects in small holes and cracks in the road surface. The moisture expands and contracts when temperatures go up and down.  This breaks up the pavement and, combined with the weight of passing cars, eventually results in a pothole.

Lakewood’s DPW is constantly driving around town trying to fill whatever potholes they can, but it’s a never-ending task during this cold season, DPW employees tell TLS.

As earlier explained, during the Winter months, the potholes are only filled with temporary patches (aka cold patches). During the warmer months, the potholes are filled with more permanent patches known as hot patches.

If you come across a pothole, report it to the Public Works at 732-905-3405.

  1. Maybe we can report by an app like on Apple App Store there is an app called “pothole alert 311” and once a pothole is fixed and they can delete it and you can see when the hole was reported and when it was fixed etc.

  2. Rely so the pot holes on Rt 88 and Clifton and James street their since last winter are also the result of two cold winters they don’t do a thing in this town about pot holes drive down ridge or park ave tell me about it

  3. I’ve seen the crews at work in freezing conditions–thank you so much Public Works crews for all you do to make our driving as safe as possible! We really appreciate it!

  4. The reason its a never ending task is because lakewoods roads are 3o years old and need to be totally stripped and repaved new roads dont get pot holes

  5. I have seen them out in the freezing cold. give credit where credit is due. Very difficult job and they will get it done just by riding on all blocks in Lakewood. Those that are just terrible , the people should call up Public works and report their area. Say thank you and stop complaining.

  6. Oh so you mean the corner of James and Route 9 that resembles the lunar surface won’t be fixed until its warm outside? Great. These roads need a complete overhaul. Not patchwork.

  7. Never the complainer, but just trying to figure as to why when the DPW drive around town as they say they do, do they not notice the condition of the roadway on Clifton Ave and Main St. And if they did notice it, then why wouldn’t that be a priority? I mean they are fixing some roadways so why not that intersection?

  8. i am not saying that road repair system that is in place in our town is perfect, but before you blame everything on the slow response of the DPW, please know witch roads are Township roads and str, what streets have not bean final paved by the builder, and were because of selfish builders and home owners who would do anything to cut conners to save money demand less than perfection from they sub contractors when they have to do work on township streets and after opening them up close them up incorrectly. Not to forget engineering, inspection dprt, they are to blame also for many problems with our streets, including the upper management… thats just my opinion.

  9. A lot of roads are state or county owned and therefore won’t be fixed by lkwd dpw.ie. rt 88. Rt 9.james.pine.Parts of Monmouth.county line . most of the busiest worst roads.

  10. Yes, give credit where credit is due. However, don’t give me the sob story that refilling potholes is a never ending job. There are areas that have never been completed from last year. Tell me that DPW needs more money or some other story, but don’t give me this drabble that it’s a never ending job. People respect the truth, stop patronizing us.

  11. Oak street near Albert passed through many a summers and keeps reopening. And I posted this same comment a year ago when TLS posted the exact article.

  12. Can TLS please have a link that goes to a page that has all the important phone numbers for these type of information?
If enough people call the county about certain potholes maybe they will up the priority level.
