The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and ZAPP has announced the opening of a new fast electric vehicle (EV) charging hub at Newark Liberty International Airport, doubling the number of fast-charging ports available at the airport.
The hub, located at the airport’s cell phone lot off Brewster Road, adjacent to the P4 daily parking garage, adds another eight direct-current fast charging ports, bringing the total to 16. The chargers are available for both airport travelers and for-hire vehicle drivers, though the Port Authority emphasized that the cell phone lot is not a staging area for ride-hailing pickups.
Officials said the expansion is part of the agency’s broader climate strategy. The new chargers are expected to cut 1,430 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, equivalent to taking 334 gas-powered cars off the road.
“Adding these new chargers at Newark Liberty is another step forward in our effort to make clean transportation more accessible,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole. “By doubling the number of fast charging ports, we’re giving travelers and professional drivers more options to go electric and reinforcing the Port Authority’s long-term commitment to a net-zero future.”
The agency has been expanding EV infrastructure across its facilities, with recent additions at John F. Kennedy International Airport and Port Newark. It has also deployed more than 1,400 electric ground service vehicles and 775 chargers at its airports.
