The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey released their budget for 2023 today, and for the first time in several years, includes a toll hike at the 8 bridges and tunnels connecting the two states.
The proposed $8.3 billion 2023 budget asks for a $1 increase at all crossings and a 45-cent increase for AirTrain fares – all which will take effect on January 1, 2023.
The budget must first be approved by the board of commissioners. That vote is scheduled for December 13.
The last time the Port Authority raised its toll rates on bridges and tunnels was in 2019.
The budget cites losses from the pandemic and inflation as two main reasons for a decrease in revenue for the bi-state agency.
“This budget continues our efforts to recover from the financial damage done by the pandemic when the volumes handled by Port Authority facilities were decimated,” Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton said.
According to the proposed budget, E-ZPass users during off-peak hours would now pay $12.75, up from the current $11.75 and $14.75 for peak hour tolls, up from the current $13.75 toll for passenger vehicles. Cash tolls would increase to $17.
The proposed toll comes weeks after the New Jersey Turnpike Authority announced in October that their budget will also increase tolls on the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike.
The Port Authority controls eight bridges and tunnels connecting New Jersey and New York. They include the Outerbridge, Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge, George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel and Lincoln Tunnel.
Millions of motorists make use of these tunnels and bridges each year.
Goniffs!
I guess they need money for bonuses for the top executives
I almost NEVER go to New York because of the tolls. I can drive all the way to Canada for less. (not counting the gas of course)
cheaper tolls to drive to Florida as well
