More street lights, side walks and cross wlks
Dispensing common sense to the bochurim and yungeleit that will allow them to not take the mind boggling risks I witness every day. They leave absolutely no margin of error in their judgment when hitching, crossing by day or night.
The young and aggressive drivers, women and men yapping on their hand held phones are a very big part of the problem as well.
1. Better lighting
2. More people wearing reflectors
3. Awareness awareness awareness
from all our leaders
Bussing
Traffic reduction
First, the crosswalks on route nine that are not by traffic lights must be removed. They give pedestrians a false sense of security that they can cross Route nine and all the cars Will stop for them because that is the law. That is not the case for two reasons first of all drivers driving 40 mph down route nine won’t see you in the crosswalk till it’s too late. Second of all drivedrivers driving 40 mph down route nine will have to slam the brakes to stop and it may cause an accident so they would not want to do that. So what happens is people cross thinking that Cars will stop But they don’t.
REFLECTORS!!! Reflectors must be made available to purchase Easley at all stores. Maybe Lakewood should make a “Shabbos of reflection” in which all Rabbis discuss this in every shul. That every single person must wear a reflector because it is a matter of life and death!
Question says “One Pedestrian Safety Improvement” and the last option is “all of the above”- does this make sense?
A large part of the problem is obviously the new law that gives pedestrians the right of way. Obviously doing away with this law would be helpful. Realistically speaking, the township should install lit crosswalks on route 9 similar to the one on Prospect by Kimball Medical Center (or whatever name they choose to call that building with beds and medical supplies). When a pedestrian wants to cross he would press a button that would light up the crosswalk so that drivers are aware that he is crossing. Works the same way a railroad crossing works…
1. Mandate reflectors!
2. Eliminate hitchhiking
3. Enforce the no parking rules in proximity to stop signs, intersections!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hands down the problem is steet light reflectors are only a bandaid and not the problem. is there a need for reflectors in NYC or Los Angeles? no because its very light outside at night INSTALL NEW LED STREET LIKE ALL OTHER CITYS DO ENOUGH IS ENOUGH
Enough about reflectors! Just walk where and when you are supposed to and 99% of the accidents will be avoided.
Focus education on meshulachim!
LeBron is right, route 9 is a highway. A driver going 40 or 45 is going to feel the sickening thud before he sees the person he hit.
I agree with #2
Distracted driving is a huge part of the problem (handheld cellphones etc)
Would love to see more enforcement of the laws
Flashing lights in cross walks like on prospect Street.
1. Street lights need to be WAY brighter
2. Red lights everywhere
3. Campaign to get everyone to wear reflectors
the situation is so serious & life threatening that I think all rabbonim need to speak about it in shul to their kehilla, which in truth is sad that its needed CAUSE THIS ENTIRE SITUATION IS COMMON SENSE that any normal pedestrian should know to put his/her safety first before crossing & putting his/her life in danger chas v’shalom.
I’m really hoping we will wake ourselves up to reality & start to be more careful with our lives & not put it in danger like last week where 4 PEOPLE WERE HIT IN LESS THEN 24 HOURS.
keep the pedestrians out of the roads!!!!! roads are for cars and sidewalks are for people. if the pedestrians want to cross the street its their responsibility to make sure that its safe not the drivers!!!!!!!!
as important as reflectors are at nite IT CANNOT BE UNDERSTATED HOW MANY NEAR MISSES THERE ARE IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. PEOPLE MMUST LOOK BEFORE CROSSING!!!!
street lights are the main problem. if the streets were as bright as in bkln, there would be no need for reflectors at all…there is no reason that 6,000 guys have to buy a reflector and wear it whenever out at night…just have brighter streets!!!
Crosswalks on the 9. Remove them.
I have a suggestion to help make sure that people cross Route 9 only at the lights. Put a nice decorative gate/fence (few feet high) along both sides of Madison Ave and have it opened only by the crosswalks by the lights and remove all other crosswalks. Obviously some people will go around them and cross in the street but it will make most sensible people only cross where it is open. It will also enhance the beauty of the Route 9 corridor…In addition, let’s make the crosswalks more noticeable by making flashing crosswalks as by Prospect St.
Educate the people to go to corner and WAIT UNTIL NO CARS ARE COMING. I can’t believe how often people dart into oncoming traffic assuming all 4 lanes will stop for them.
Yes Mr/Ms “WOW”,
6000 people should obtain reflectors. No matter how bright the street lights are, it is still difficult to see a person covered in black!
I think if the reflector belt manufacturers would put a designer name on the reflector belts, many more would be worn. It works with shirts, ties, belts and shoes.
Another thing I am surprised that no one mentioned is the lack of sidewalks on many of our streets. This forces pedestrians to walk on the street thereby putting themselves in danger.
Awareness awareness awareness. People drive and walk having no clue of what is going on around them.
Right on red does not mean zipping through a red light. It means coming to a full stop and then proceeding to make a right turn AFTER verifying that it is safe to do so. Pedestrians and cars that have the green do not have to yield to the driver making a right on red. (Common sense but most drivers in this town seem to think otherwise)
Keep in mind if a car is stopped in front of you, it must be stopped for a reason. We understand that you are in a hurry but do not just zip around a car that is stopped.
Pedestrians need to be aware that a car needs time to stop and just because you walk right in front of the car doesn’t mean they see you. Stand on Forest & 4th on any evening and you will understand what שומר פסיאם ה׳ means. It always boggles my mind how someone who is smart in Bais Medrash is such a פסי when they cross the street.
People should walk on sidewalks, not three and four abreast in the street!
Guinness you are right. Also stop walking on the roads 3&4 across. It doesn’t matter if you are on Rt9 or a neighborhood street. Streets are for cars , sidewalks for people. Don’t say more sidewalks because there have been new ones put in and people still avoid using them. Learn the laws of safety.
We need BOTH lower speed limits and more traffic lights, this is why NYC has pro rata less accidents, lower speed limits now.
Walking in the middle of the street when sidewalks are available is foolish and dangerous. It is hard to see walkers. If no sidewalks are available, walk near the edge of the street, and wear a reflector.
How about making a law that pedestrians have to wear reflectors when walking on a street without a sidewalk?
We shouldn’t need more reflectors, or more Traffic Lights, or even lower speed limits.
Additionally NO LAW or Education can trigger common sense.
If you need education or for it to be illegal to, Text while driving, walk into 4 lanes of oncoming traffic, On Cellphone while driving you are may to many steps too late, and to be quite frank there’s nothing that can help you if you dont value your own life or anyone else’s life.
You can have a Rav speak about it every week, but that’s pathetic. The same way they didn’t use common sense beforehand, don’t expect any change afterwards.
The root of the problem is that unfortunately people are selfish and don’t think beyond themselves which results in: “If i would like to send a text, my driving won’t deter me” or “if i need a hitch somewhere i don’t mind walking in the middle of the street dressed in all black” or “If i want to cross the street, why should i care that there are 4 lanes of oncoming traffic in the rain, they should stop for me” etc…
Now, that we have the problem and we know the solution, we can discuss that other problem that exists. The problem that people aren’t becoming more considerate or themselves or others, so how do we prevent people from getting killed and injured from the dangerous behavior.
Wearing a reflector would help the person dressed in black in the middle of the street, that he can be seen and swerved around by oncoming vehicle.
Lower speed limits wont change anything because people already drive over the posted 25MPH down a side street, at closer to 40MPH.
More Street lights will help drastically, allowing drivers that would like to see the road a much better ability to do so.
More Traffic lights will certainly permit the people to cross easier, although they should use caution wherever they cross because crossing by a light doesn’t grant you indemnity from driver wrongdoings.
To sum it all up, we don’t want to take responsibility for our actions, and we think that if we can blame it on reflectors, traffic light, street lights and lack of laws we will all be cured.
Look at the Law that requires Motorists to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalks. Does this law make any sense to you??? If the drivers are distracted and don’t look for the pedestrians, they certainly won’t find them, and certainly not stop to allow them to cross.
This is far beyond Reflectors , a Cross bridge on rt 9 makes Sense like they have on the parkway .. Yes ,i agree with @Shmigegy if a car is stopped , dont Drive around them , omgoodness I dont know how many times I let children/people cross the street and someone comes from around me into on coming traffic and almost RUNS OVER THE KIDS !!!!! just remember your life ,their life matters That can be yours or somene you know Relative walking on the street …. Be Careful not Selfish
