Poll: Should the Age to Purchase Tobacco in NJ be Raised To 21?

If newly introduced legislation by State Sen. Richard Codey (D-Essex) passes, you may need to be 21 to purchase cigarettes and other tobacco in New Jersey.

In most states, the minimum age to purchase tobacco is 18.

  1. While I’m no fan of smoking, I believe that once a kid gets into the habit, they will do whatever it takes to obtain the product. Raising the legal age for purchasing tobacco will only make it a bigger headache for youths, but not stop them from buying cigarettes. I’ve never seen any studies, but I’m led to believe that the number of addicted smokers began smoking between the ages of 18-21 is minuscule.

  2. i love how all these people that vote are 21 already and YOU yourself bought before 21 and would’ve been upset if someone was trying to change the law…Even so if u up it to 21 do you really really think that minors cant get are you kidding yourself. For some reason its never a problem for minors to purchase alcohol stop fooling yourselfs and find something else to complain about….im usually a calm person but this stuff seriously ticks the daylight out of me

  3. To #2: You mention “all these people.” Is there anyone in particular you are referring to? Where did you get this bit of information? You sound very angry. Seek help.

  4. How many 18 year olds did we lose in this war, some returning, if they were lucky, with missing limbs, burns, etc., for our FREEDOM? That’s OK as long as they don’t smoke. Really?

  5. As a former smoker i know kids will still get cigarettes no matter how old they are, they usually all start at ages 14-16, this law will not stop Teens from buying cigarettes. If people to stop get them to use the method of the Allen Carr’s easy way to stop smoking book.
