They should stop at a diagonal, physically blocking traffic in all directions.
I think it should be mandatory and not optional to stop for school buses.
Poll. Should kids be required to wear bullet proof vests to school. Despite cost and comfort.
Definitely– for safety do anything!!! I’m sure all parent will prefer live children that come home a bit later!!!!!!!
yes,the Sunday driver in the horrible weather conditions let kids cross a two way street!!!!
How about an alternative proposal? Bus drivers should be prohibited from discharging students below a given age (lets say fifth grade) unless there is an adult at the bus stop. In other words, the child must be delivered from the supervision of the bus driver directly into the supervision of a responsible adult. Understandably this will create a bit of a hardship to some parents but if we feel that our children require this added degree of safety we should step up, not throw it on the already overtaxed tzibbur. Since there are usually multiple families at each bus stop, parents can organize a rotation to wait out for the bus. If there is no parent at the bus stop and/or the driver has to wait, a fine should be imposed on the parent. Fine should increase with each subsequent incident.
Lkwd guy: Doesnt seem to realistic- a mother cant always shlep out with her whole family!
Yes yes and yes! Keep the kids out of the street. We make all these “safety rules” to protect people but all we Are doing is putting them at risk and in harms way. The same is for cross walks we are telling people don’t even look when you cross the street and when your in the ICU on life support you could be happy that the guy that hit you got a ticket. PEOPLE BELONG ON THE SIDEWALKS CARS ON THE STREET IF YOU WANT TO WALK OR CROSS THE STREET ITS YOUR JOB TO MAKE SURE TOU DONT GET HIT BY A CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s simply outrageous that this concept requires a poll! What’s the Shaila?? It’s inyan pikuach nefesh! An 8 yr old running across County Line!!! A rainy day! An inattentive driver! I will stop here. May Hashem give sechel to those who influence these laws…
Maybe bus monitors who cross the kids would be cheaper?!?!
It is not realistic moneywise and it will take forever.
Better idea is to have a spikes strip that comes out of the left side of the bus when stopped.
Machmir: What is that supposed to mean?
Yes, yes,and yes it’s a must.
Have central stop on each block, maybe in middle so all kids walk same distance. Teach them how to cross. Better yet, DRIVERS LEARN THE RULES OF YELLOW AND RED LIGHTS ON THE BUSSES. Slow down, the speed limit in my development is 25 but most cars go through at at least 40. The main thing to do is SLOW DOWN.
I just saw bus drop off kid on rt.9 last night @ 9pm I mean come on!
that as usual the poll is impossible to answer as questioned. There is a middle ground that makes more sense. It can depend on the busyness of the street, often with some minor tweaking of the route it is doable without any cost, and other possible variables. I think there are situations where it makes sense and those where it does not. Perhaps Lakewood needs someone with a brain that figures out bus routes that make sense.
Cars unfortunately do not stop all the time! It’s petrifying every time the driver drops my son on the other side of a 40 mph two way street. It should be priority one to do this,
I think that the buses should stop on a diagonal; block the traffic on the street. But probably, the driving animals would pull around and drive on the sidewalk.
I have an idea. Why doesn’t the Lakewood Scoop publish the traffic laws concerning school buses. Traffic is required to stop in both directions and the bus driver does not leave the bus stop until every child is safely off the bus or across the street. The law already exists requiring an adult to receive children under 6 getting off the bus.
If one is concerned for their childs safety then, by all means, wait at the busstop and cross your child yourself. A call to the Lakewood PD to alert them to the license plates of the cars not stopping for the school bus may be in order. We all can help with that.
We bearly have bssing as it is. Most our kids get to school late or coming so early with no supervision because of courtesy bussing. In addition the routes are already SO long. Parents can wait outside for their children if they’re so concerned
100% yes unless over age 12…
Get busses with doors on each side and that will solve all the problems. When I went to school in Brooklyn the busses I went to school had doors on both sides
Maybe send them home via drone??
No!
They should continue the way they did for the last 100 years.
And bus drivers shouldn’t let the kids off the bus until traffic comes to a complete stop.
Bisyata dishmaya , no more harm will happen
no way…u will have those mothers come out to tell the driver to wait while her zeesah boy gets cajoled out of bed, begged to get dressed ,bribed to wash his face, and another minute to pick out his 3 noshes for the day….
it should depend on the type of street. some streets are quieter while some are very busy… my kids bus changed its schedule a little in order to pick up my kid on the same side for a very busy street. it wasn’t a major change to its schedule or cost any more money. it just took some common sense from the BOE/buss company. a more important thing would be for the BOE to allow the buss companies or school administrators to have a say in the planning of the route to begin with. they know the town / traffic patterns etc. and can make a much better decision than the BOE computer system..
“Doesnt seem to realistic- a mother cant always shlep out with her whole family!”
That same mother wants others to put themselves out for the sake of her child, but she can’t be bothered to do her part! Yes, it may be difficult to wait at the bus stop, but it IS HER child, and HER responsibility. It is not easy having children!
It seems people don’t understand the ramifications of such a proposal. Our instinctive reaction to protect our kids at all cost is resulting some illogical comments.
This would necessitate having busses circling around the block many times over to accomplish same side drop off. Talk about adding even more time to an already extended bus ride. There are primary aged kids traveling over an hour each way. Should we add more time?
In some cases we’d have to add more bus routes. We’re barely covering the routes we have now. Remember the canceled courtesy bussing?
A much simpler solution is to have parents greet their own children at the bus stop and cross them accordingly.
Why aren’t those parents who posted above, and others, greeting their own children. They want others to do all that’s necessary for the childrens’ safety, even at great cost and inconvenience to others. Yet, it seems, it’s not that urgent that they need to make their own ‘at all cost, efforts to ensure the safety of their own children. Once you start to excuse yourself – maybe you’re working, maybe you can’t ‘shlep the family out’, whatever it may be – and you’ve been doing such all along… is that not a double standard. I’m sure if it’s extremely important a way can be found. …or maybe you rationalize, ‘what can I do…?’
Do us all a favor and greet your own children. The parents should be the ones most concerned with the safety of their very own children, doing everything they can ‘at all cost’.
I do.
The laws are in place and work well when people actsully obey them …. IF YOU SEE A SCHOOL BUS WITH LIGHTS FLASHING STOP !!! You would want someone to stop for your child/grandchild wouldn’t you? WHEN YOU CROSS A STREET …STOP LOOK BOTH ways to ensure no one is coming then crOSS when clear….come on people this is basic stuff PAY ATTENTION … SLOW DOWN AND PAY ATTENTION WE ALL HAVE SMART PHONES GOOGLE NJ BUS SAFETY LAWS READ THEM LEARN THEM
Many children are left at their bus stops ages as young as 4, to walk home alone, yes, what if your child just decides to cross the main road,?or just decides to walk in the. street on their way home!
Parents precede the child, where r u?
I don’t see the big deal about making 2 doors on either side of the bus !!!!!! This way no one has to cross the street & cars can pass etc what all the neg/positive blabber about!?!? Stop hocking ah kup!!!!!
What is this, Soviet Russia? Why must there be one top-down directive for all? Let the free market decide. Some school / bus companies can provide more added safety, others more operating efficiency. The parents would decide which is better for their children, and bear the added risks or costs.
How would a bus with doors on both sides help?? The child would still be crossing the street with opposite side traffic oncoming if it’s a 2 way street and the stop is across from where the child lives. I have seen too many near accidents of cars passing stopped buses..I would like to see stops only on the side of the street where children live especially on busy 2 way streets.
Parents should be more responsible for their children. There are small children left alone at bus stops. There should be parent or sitter available to watch children getting on and off buses .why can’t boys and girls be on the same bus? They ride in cars and walk together.
