[TLS POLL IN EXTENDED ARTICLE] Police in Fort Lee, NJ, began ticketing pedestrians caught texting while walking after a rise in jaywalking incidents, according to reports. Police said they have seen a rise in the number of pedestrians struck due to them not paying attentionas they text.
The price of the ticket is $85 per offense in Fort Lee.
Should Lakewood Police crack down on pedestrians texting while walking? Take the poll.
No
well they would have to make it an offense first.
yes its a problem, sometimes. a reckless walking charge would be better, if the pedestrian was being a danger then we charge him. if not, then why would you charge him.
the problem is a lot of the time texting while driving & walking can be a deadly combination.
What’s next, no eating while walking?
well you shouldnt be eating while walking anyways!!!! weather ye ticket or no ticket
Some things are just common sense! You can’t make a law and micromanage everything. Eating or talking to the person next to you while walking can also be distracting.
I don’t agree with regulating texting while walking in general. BUT, I do feel that it should be prohibited for any pedestrian to text while crossing any of our streets.
Additionally, I can vividly recall the time where I just nearly missed running over a bicycle rider who was – unbelievably – texting while riding in the vehicular lanes!! I just couldn’t believe what I saw! Now that.. should absolutely be illegal!! (if it isn’t already)
Get off your phones while u drive
Insanity!
NO!! Gov’t should stop trying to micromanage and regulate every aspect of citizens’ lives!!
LPD should first focus on the cars driving like animals rather then the folks walking on the streets. This idea makes no sense!! How about the people talking on their cellphones while driving?! I have found that most of the time when I see a car driving erratically they are usually talking on their phone. Or how about the drivers that are crossing over or making a left onto route nine when it recently became illegal!!
Think police should continue to ticket people for using their phone while driving, talking or texting. Its the law but for some reason the people of Lakewood don’t think it is for them, maybe if more people got ticketed it would send a message, It is unsafe to drive and talk on the cell phone let alone text.
Not just stam while walking, but, maybe when crossing the street or, if you bump into someone and cause him harm. If you text while walking on a sidewalk and don’t bump into someone it should not be a ticketable offense.
First thay shloud crack down on txting/talking whhile driving!!!!
texting while walking; texting while riding a bike. it shows you the idiocy of the generation. certainly all those messages were urgent.
You got it No. 12 -But if the Police gives Ticket ,then it is harassment
will we need licenses on our foreheads? will we need insurance too?
The LPD should follow the law about driving and texting/talking on a hand held. Driving in Lakewood is a problem, not walking.
How bout ticketing 4 talking on the phone while walking – or better yet taking on the phone altogether or walking altogether ethier one should b Illegal or maybe they should ban texting while sitting or sitting while texting or perhaps smoking while walking or smoke texting should get fines doubled ………..u get the point !? Doubt it !
the real problam is not Texting while driving its Driving while texting that’s dangerous and how about eating and driving or even drinking (besides alcohol) and the worst is looking both ways while driving instead of looking in front – and the whole backingup thing should b Illegal -y who can see behing them with a Cranned neck out of the corner of 1 eye (while texting) there should b a law that u have 2 turn around ur car instead of backing up and @ night there should b a law that all texters should wear reflectors so this way we know 2 stay out of their way and all cops should wear bright reflecting shirts so we know where they r so we can avoid them or slow down ……..just a thought
Forget cracking down on that. We should ticket EVERYONE WHO ISNT DRESSED TZINIUS!! The men here shouldnt be exposed to such things!!
i thought this was america not the ussr. next it will be illegal to breathe and move together too
I agree with #7 and #13
NO!
Stop with the laws. I think there should be a law that for every new law some bored legislator wants to pass, they should remove TWO laws.
If you regulate the citizens out of their peaceful existence 1-they will eventually revolt.
2- everyone will be a criminal
I think we are very close to that.
let the goverment stay out of our lives, next ull get a ticket for talking to somone while waLKING
#18 your right
however they would run out of paper so fast writing so many tickets !
what has happened to us ?
i am embaressed walking in the streets
i have to take my glasses off [ and forgot i might get ticket for that because i am bumping into things because i cant see where i am going all thanks to the lack of some women not taking this issue seriously ]
I agree with #18
This is also another issue. Are there any rules that apply to Lakewood? What goes on in a day could be $$$$$$$$$$. No seatbelts, hitch hiking, talking on cell phones, jay walking, speeding, parking etc……
TLS :
Make a Poll about texting or talking on cellphones when crossing the street
So, let me get this straight. First reflectors; now no texting. Here’s an idea: Hire a “baby sitter” to take you across the street. Here’s another idea: look both ways before crossing the street. That’s what my mother taught me.
Pedestrians must be aware of their surroundings. An individual that is absorbed in texting is a danger to himself and others. He/she may walk in the path of oncoming traffic.
What does the way a person is dressed have to do with the use of a cell phone. Cell phones are not to be used while driving, talking or texting.
How about cracking down on people walking in the street instead of using the sidewalks. Also the ones that don’t stop at the stop sign or the line in the street!
Soon you’ll need a permit to walk on the sidewalks altogether… And if you’re caught walking too fast, you’ll be issued a speeding ticket.
why does the gov. find it necessary to try to pass laws that infringes on peoples rights. Most of these laws involve basic common sense -which evidently, a lot of people lack; but you can’t make up laws due to people’s ignorance or stupidity, otherwise there would be a heck of a lot of people ticketed. Officials should be more concerned about reducing crime.
Agree with #33,streets are made for trafffic not people, sidewalks are ment to be used by people walking.
