Rabbi Bender wrote a beautiful article this week on this topic. Was either in the Ami or Mishpacha
There should be an option for other. While I don’t think homework should be abolished, I do think it should be reduced significantly. High school girls are overloaded with work when they could be helping their parents.
Imagine going to work all day and when you get home you have to work some more!
Not abolished but def reduced
Not sure what the point of the survey it’s not going to change
I agree with other. The teachers/rebbeim need to consider the many different family dynamics involved. They often give hw that needs either parent involvement or supervision, and there’s only so far the parents can be stretched….
It’s not just hs kids. Elementary kids need time to relax in a non stressful atmosphere. I shouldn’t have to fight with a child to do hw!
Homework is needed so it keeps parents active and in the know with there child’s education. Can’t compare to a job as for a job if you are not a productive worker you get fired so that modivates. unlike a kid in school will just fly under the radar and will never be able to get a job but homework shouldn’t be a burden more like a quick review of that days School work
You never wrote based on what reason(s)
For some reason I might vote yes while for other reasons I would vote no. I therefore did not vote at all
@ John . That’s the same reason that I didn’t vote for President. The polls should’ve given me all reasons that I might want to vote for Trump. There were some good things that I liked about him but then there were some things that I didn’t like about him so I abstained.
Our children are under enough pressure, when they get home from school give them a break it’s useless to overload them with homework, let them come home & chill or play all
The school system is all messed up. The schools are confused what their roll is. And their interest are iffy.
To other: Or they can just come home and allowed to be the kids they are, and not slaves to their parents
I voted no.
But… maximum 10-15 minutes per night for elementary children and 30 minutes for high school kids.
Homework is not a bad thing. It allows parents to get involved and see how their child is doing in school.
But children shouldn’t give up their evening for that.
One thing is definate. Young teachers that dont have large families should not be given the authority to decide how much homework should be given.
This is a poll for june, not for september when all the homework sheets are photocopied and assignments prepared..poor timing..but always gonna be debatable and nothing changing..yes great article from r bender
Homework should be done in school, home should be for family time & relaxation.
My sons Rebbi sent a note to sign that either the father will learn each night or hire a tutor. The former is strenuous for many different reasons. The latter is simple too expensive. Just abolish it and/or slow the pace of learning down.
As a grandmother I agree that homework has to be reduced, not abolished completely. However, the homework given should be within the child’s ability. It should not be homework for the parents. I’m not referring to parents helping out when the child has a question or a little difficulty completing the work. I mean projects, reports and preparation that the child obviously can not do on his/her own. That kind of homework should be abolished.
I your hair is short enough, you don’t need the extra Chizuk.
If**
Can we add an option to the poll?
Not to be abolished but limited to 10-15 min!
Here’s an interesting take: My sons teacher (rightfully) felt that there should not be any homework. So 5 minutes before dismissal they all did homework together in school. It was greatly appreciated. Then towards the end of the year i noticed that i did not have a good grasp on how well he was doing at all with his schoolwork! By that time is was too late to help him in time for his finals. The teacher was super accommodating and gave him a modified final, but i can’t help wondering wh
at would have happened had i know all along he was struggling…
R mattisyahu solomon said not to give homework. I dnt think there is room for stating opinions abt this.
The schools can give all the homework they want. I tell my kids not to do it. No one cares. 10 seconds after the school year, or their school career, no one cares what they got on chemistry. And it has zero impact on their lives. Theyre not becoming chemists.
Homework is needed not only for a parent to see where their child is holding but also for the children to learn that if we don’t keep on reviewing and working hard we wont get anywhere. While its possible that homework should be reduced a child has to learn that we must work to gain knowledge and to be successful. Hatzlacha
i think the main point here is that homework causes a lot of tension between parents and children, as who wants to do homework?
and the flip side is the teachers need the lessons to be cemented in with review!
IDEA!! – teachers need to figure out a way to make homework stimulating and interesting so its a stress free review
btw… most children can learn everything taught till 10th grade in a few months in high school why push them earlier?
How about 2 or 3 weeks a night there should be homework and the other 2 weeks there should be no homework..
Oops sorry! Make that 2 or 3 nights a week there should be…. and the other 2 nights there should not be….
What in world are you thinking to destroy education? I think homework is very important because it help students to keep on track and learn what have been taught in class subject. It only way we can remember things and it supports our future. Homework is not going out a knife in our brain nor in our timing it help us to focus and feel the subject better. Now Parents you should be happy about homework level and be part of relationship of your children
10-15 is a lot when the average Lakewood family has lets say 4-5 children and it eats up quality time the parents should be spending playing/shmoozing…..with their children. Also what may take your child 10-15 min to complete may take other children 30-45 to finish. Therefore I think max 5 min per child per class is more than sufficient. Or do homework once a week so the parents can feel connected as to how their child is doing.
I find it interesting that many people are posting that homework keeps the parents informed about how their children are doing. I always thought homework was for the kids and parents should only become involved if needed. On a regular basis, why can’t the kids just do their work, on their own, without parents having any input, unless they feel like checking in on their children?
at my kids school, homework is considered to be between student and teacher. The parents do not need to get involved, unless there is reading/kriah that needs listening to
Not a fair question!
How about such a question: Should TAXES be done away with?
I’m sure most will say “Sure TAXES should be done away with. Does that make it a smart desicion? Not at all. Try running a country without taxes.
Homework may not be fun, but it surely serves a purpose.
M. (Yes, I have a few children who do homework daily, and wish it was done away with)
The day is long and structured and children need to have some space and time to just BE and learn how to entertain themselves. Plus, parents need to spend quality time with their children and still get through the many home tasks in the evening. For some children homework is a breeze and not stressful. For others it is super difficult and makes problems for the parent child relationship. How about slowing down the curriculum so necessary review is accomplished in school, and more communication with the teachers. Why the grand race and competition to stuff information into kids while important other skills and growth processes are sacrificed? Lowering stress in school and home would benefit students, teachers, and parents, and perhaps be a good part of a solution to many problems facing our children, youth, and families.
Our Boys school gives our child a max of 10 minutes of homework a day. Usually does it less than 5 Minutes. We Appreciate it and it makes sense.
I thought Rabbi Matisyahu said NO HOMEWORK? Doesn’t our town listen to him?
As a teacher…
NO HOMEWORK!
I would LOVE to abolish homework. But I know the need to make sure it’s drilled into a child’s head/ well understood once they get home. I’d love to see it reduced to a few questions a night.
I have a very delayed child- it takes her 3-4 times as long to do work as the typical kid. I’ve contacted the teacher and told them I will stop then after 20 minutes of working (which sometimes takes an hour if she gets distracted).
That being said, sometimes children in older classes need to know work over weeks/ months to complete a project. Once they get a job and a team project, they need to learn how to work like that.
In a previous yated roundtable article R Bender gave the suggestion that it’s time to print end the homework Madness bumper stickers to create an awareness. We need a few thousand dollars to get something like this started, Make some noise and let’s get everyone including our Educators and school leaders talking about this.
