VIDEO: This afternoon, dozens of police officers from Lakewood and Toms River escorted the body of slain officer Chris Matlosz through Lakewood en route to the Howell funeral home. Police picked up the body from the Community Medical Center in Toms River and drove through town via Cedarbride and Clifton Avenues, where dozens of fellow officers saluted the fallen officer as the hearse passed by.
The funeral has been set for Thursday. The viewing will take place on Wednesday.
Note: Police officers requested that TLS ask motorists and pedestrians to please respect the funeral procession, and not cut through. Cutting through a procession during a funeral, is disrespectful to the fallen officer and is insensitive to their loss.
Thousands of officials and law enforcement officials from around the state are expected to attend the funeral.
Sad. Very very sad.
May the family and fellow officers be consoled by G-D himself.
just makes me sad and heartbroken to see this happen
what makes a person so hardened? so cold to do such an unthinkable thing as to kill someone who did nothing to them?
peace to all involved, in this chain reaction, of this unhuman act done to this officer
sad for both sides
please make way for a very brave man..
deepest condolences
Please use alternate routes on Thursday between the hours of 1100 and 300pm as Rt 9,Main St, S Clifton will be grid locked.
I heard that the funeral will be in a church. Does anyone know if any Rabbanim permit attending such an important event to show solidarity with the family and the police force?
You may remain at entrance but not enter
May he RIP
Not only Officers from around the state but a good possibility from around the country as well. There will be lots of Police officers, Firefighters, EMS and other agencies showing support for the Lakewood Police Family that day.
Speaking of gridlock, you might just not want to drive anywhere on the north side of town for pretty much all day. If I remember in 2007 it was gridlocked most of the day starting early ..like 0800 to who knows when in the evening
Jake~ what “both sides” are you referring to?
Anonymous~ Please tell me that you posted this traffic warning to make it easier for the participants in this tragic ceremony!
So you mean to tell me the mayor and 3/4 of the township committee can’t enter the church?
# 12 anonymous-
good point! and very sad if true!!
I wish they would have made the funeral somewhere else so that the Yeshiva community could come and show their respects to this fallen hero
by both sides i hope you do not mean officer matlosz and the ANIMAL with no soul. RIP 317!!
The church can probably only hold a few hundred people anyway . The entire community can pay their respects after the church service ,by escorting the officer on foot through the streets of Lakewood .
This town is gonna be jammed on Thursday. Don’t drive anywhere near Madison-Lex & 88 to County Line. Can s/one post from where to where, exactly, the processiin will travel ? So those of us that can’t, for whatever reason, attend the funeral, can at least stand along the route to show support & solidarity to our brave officers & to 317’s family. Thank you.
Lets be real people…..if your so concerned about going into a church to pay respect to a man who helped the community….dont go…hatzlacha
im not concerned…..i just want to know if it is permitted. Because we are not supposed to go into a church. ill have to ask my rav
for the committe men they may show their respect where they must as according to the direction they will receive from their rabbinic authority. if one is a KOHEN he will not be able to enter a funeral home either way as he cant for anyone but his father and other close relatives.
There is a wake Wed afternoon but i dont know if its open to the public (or mutar).
Suggestion:
Why dont we just line the entire Route Nine in vast numbers from 11th – 6th streets to show our respect publicly when the procession travels from Howell -funeral home to the Church in Lakewood. if the time is publisized we can try to get the word out.
Number 16 you won’t be let in. The church is too small and it will be reserved for his family and brothers in blue. But if you would like to pay your respects it can be done outside of the church with all the other officers and civilians. Thank you for the support
I am sure the township committee will all be present for this day of respect.
Everyone knows there are some areas in Lakewood that are dangerous (guns and drugs etc) and we just sit around and wait to see what will happen next. All the people renting out their houses to trash with all their connections, it’s time to let go. Go invest somewhere else, not in middle of normal neighborhoods, making a buck on someone elses life.
It’s about time the politicians were proactive, and not just reactive.
Time to get the brutal crime and gangs out of Lakewood.
Please let’s not make a Chilul Hashem this Thursday. Hundreds of cops will be here. When we have a levaya the cops go out of the way to accommodate traffic patterns for us. An opportunity to make a huge Kiddush Hashem exists. Let’s not blow it
IT WILL BE A GRIDLOCK ALERT RT9/MADISON AND 88/MAIN STREET.
nice to see the community showing concern and support. his funeral will be held at the church because it is his religion. lining the road in support of chris would be a wonderful tribute to a guy that did everything he could to protect those who live in lakewood. all township officers would appreciate that show of support.
Please see if you can get an exact time when the hearse will be driving down Rt 9 or Forest Ave after the service so that the community can come out and show their respect
WHAT A TERRIBLE WASTE OF SUCH A YOUNG LIFE. MAY HE REST IN PEACE. AND MAY WE NEVER SEE SUCH TRAGEDY HERE AGAIN. IT’S TIME TO CLEAN THIS TOWN UP AND GET RID OF ALL THE TRASH. MANY OF US PAY HIGH TAXES TO LIVE HERE AND WE CAN’T EVEN SHOP IN OUR OWN TOWN. WHEN WILL THE PEOPLE IN LAKEWOOD RISE UP AND BAN TOGETHER TO TAKE THIS TOWN BACK? TO OUR POLICE OFFICERS IN LAKEWOOD, WE THANK YOU FOR OUR PROTECTION AND MAY YOU ALL BE SAFE!
I will, with g-d’s help, make my best effort to participate this Thursday in paying my last respects to Officer Matlosz.
Can anyone get an approximate time and where the hears will be. A lot of people would like to show their support but have no idea where when and how, thanks.
I WAS A RESIDENT IN LAKEWOOD ALL MY LIFE BEFORE MOVING TO FLORIDA 10 YEARS AGO. IN FACT LPD WAS MY MENTORS WHEN I WAS THEIR HONORARY POLICE OFFICER AT THE AGE OF 12 WALKING ALONGSIDE BILL SHEIK .EVEN THOUGH I NEVER MADE IT BE A POLICE OFFICER.AND I DID NOT PERSONALLY KNOW THIS OFFICER LIKE I ,VE KNOWN OTHERS.MY HEART IS STILL WITH THE GUYS AT THE LPD OLD AND NEW .MAY GOD BLESS THEM AND THE OFFICERS FAMILY .LOVE ALLWAYS MARCELLOUS WHITE 504
It’s all about hakoras hatov, plain and simple!
We all have the duty and responsibility to show our heartfelt appreciation for this incredible hero in uniform that was viciously uprooted from our midst by a savage miscreant. The Torah continuously warrants that we always show our appreciation even to a lifeless compound, like by Moshe and the water, or to animals as we have seen this past Shabbos shira (birds) all the more is it incumbent on us to show our appreciation to fellow human beings who are created in G-d’s image – especially an awe-inspiring individual who has performed the highest form of self sacrifice whilst protecting all the rest of us.
The very least that we can do is to show him honor and dignity as he is we escorted to his final resting place.
if for no other reason – Cops will be here from every city in NJ – getting their 1st look at Lakewood – If we make a nice impression , maybe someday they spare a Yid a ticket somewhere. Of course this is NOT the reason to but if you are boneheaded enough and need a selfish reason, this one might work
I, too, will make it my business to be there in a show of respect and honor to Officer Matlosz.
to # 32 that is alful thing to say or think stay home
I couldn’t attend the vigil tonight but I put my candle in the window in honor of Chris. My deepest sympathy for Kelly, his mother, and his brother. Along with all the men & women of Lakewood Police Department, you make me proud.
#30, marcellous, my husband remembers seeing you walk with Bill and told my son-in-law who is a LP Officer all about you. I read your post to him. He remembers you like yesterday.
To #33: Many a truth is told in jest!
