Police this morning identified the pedestrian struck and killed by a vehicle last night.

At approximately 8:40 pm, Officers responded to the area of Rt 70 and Vermont Avenue to investigate a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.

Upon arrival, Officers learned that a 56-year-old female from Whiting was operating her 2017 Nissan Altima west on Route 70 when she struck a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the highway outside the crosswalk,” Detective Lieutenant Greg Staffordsmith says.

“As a result, the 29-year-old Lakewood man, identified as William Fernando Campo Verde, sustained a serious head injury and was unresponsive on scene. He was transported to Monmouth Medical Southern Campus Hospital where he unfortunately succumbed to his inures.”

As of now, no summons have been issued and the crash is still under investigation, Staffordsmith said.
