Police this afternoon released more details of the accident which left one dead and multiple others injured.

At approximately 8:40pm last night, a 2003 Nissan Altima operated by 41 year old German Alonso Velasquez Gonzalez of Toms River, was traveling west on Route 88 when he rear-ended a 2016 Nissan Sentra near the intersection of Dr. Szold Way. He then fled the scene westbound.

Approximately a 1/2 mile west of the first crash, near the entrance to Ocean County Park, the 2003 Nissan Altima crossed the centerline and sideswiped an eastbound 2003 Honda Civic. The Nissan Altima then collided head-on with an eastbound 2014 Chevy Cruz.

As a result of the head on collision, German Alonso Velasquez Gonzalez, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced at the scene.

The driver of the Honda Civic and his two juvenile passengers were transported to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus to be evaluated as a precaution. They were subsequently released.

The Chevy Cruz was occupied by five passengers. All five sustained non life-threatening injuries. The most serious was sustained by the driver, who suffered a broken leg. All were transported to Local hospitals for further evaluation and treatment.

Route 88 remained closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene.

The investigation is still ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Justin Pederson or Det. Mike Proto of the Ocean County Prosecutors Office.
