Police Checkpoints Around Town

pulled-over-by-copsTLS has received reports about several checkpoints around town today, including in the Pine and 9, and Cross and 9 areas. There are officers standing on the road looking out for expired registration, seat belt and handheld cellphone violators. It’s important to note, if your car registration is not up to date, you can get your car towed. One driver who was pulled over told TLS, that Sgt. Pete Smoke was kind enough to let him go with just a warning, but our suggestion is: don’t break the law and you will not get pulled over.

  1. a car was stopped by a cop monday afternoon on clifton ave. by a cop on his bike. The driver was told that the car is making noises, and since its registration is one that is for a vehicle that fits the collector item criteria, the cop will start doing an inspection right there. Upon completing his inspection he told the driver that this car should really be towed and he wrote up several summonses and finished off by saying that if the owner confiscates the car on his own the summonses will be dropped. during the conversation the officer carried on that there are many such cars on the road here in Lakewood and that they dont deserve to be and that this will be enforced. Question #1 can a cop pull one over for a car making noises? #2 if the car fits the collectors item criteria (less than a certain amount of mileage per year) and has passed state inspection is ther anything a cop can enforce or tow a car?

  2. A car still must meet basic standards of road worthiness. If there are obvious mechanical issues effecting safety, yes, citations can be issued and a car can be impounded. A faulty muffler can be cited and can therefore also be used to justify a stop. Bottom line: enough with the shtick already – keep your car roadworthy and legally papered and you’ll have no trouble.
