Five Brick residents were arrested and charged this morning for bias egg-throwing incidents, Police Chief Rob Lawson tells TLS. At about 2:00 AM, police received a call from an Orthodox resident who said he had eggs thrown at him from a vehicle, while the suspect made the bias remark of, “You better move on you Jew boys”.
Officer Kevin Doyle responded to the area and got a description of the vehicle and its occupants, from the victim. The vehicle was described as a silver Liberty Jeep with one headlight out, the same vehicle police and LCSW were searching for for a similar incident last week.
A short time later, Officer Summer Cunliffe patrolling the area of Forest Avenue and 2nd Street, came across the vehicle matching the description, and pulled it over, Lawson says.
Prior to making driver contact, several witnesses passing by told Officer Cunliffe that this was the suspect who had thrown the eggs.
As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver admitted to the egg-throwing incidents before even asked about it, Lawson says.
The vehicle’s five white male occupants – three adults and two juveniles – were arrested and brought into police headquarters for booking.
The suspects – two 20 year olds and one 18 year old as well as 2 juveniles ages 16 and 17 – were each charged with 2 counts of Harassment and 1 count of Bias Intimidation, which upgrades the crime to an indictable crime, Lawson says.
“We don’t tolerate this type of behavior towards our residents”, Chief Lawson says. “We will go the extra mile to make the apprehension if possible”, Lawson says. TLS.
why where they not charged with an obvious hate crime? Lock em up before they come after us Jews with clubs and guns!
Justice is best served at the end of a boot!
where i do not condone their actions they are kids doing kid things . do youreally wat to reuin their lives over a stupid prank.. fine them and force them to serve the community for 6 months but do not charge them with a felony. they deserve a chance
Bias Intimidation is a Hate Crime. LPD has a very high arrest rate when these crimes are reported immediately. Drive by harassments have been a high priority of the PD for as long as I can remember. During the early 70’s and into the 80’s, I – and some other officers – was fortunate to be assigned as a “Rabbi Decoy” during Shabbos’ and helped to minimize the occurances. In the last few years, LCSW has been helpful in getting the reports to the police in a timely manner. Good Job LPD!
wow no one who committs a hate crime against some one derseves a second chance, these felons must be punished.
# 2 what a great idea!! maybe the kid killers should also be fined and serve in community service.
These (moderated) should serve the maximum penalty for the crime they committed and then work in the Holocaust memorial as custodians. Shame on them!!
We are verry lucky to have chief Lawson .
Way to go LPD! You guys are the best. Keep up the good work. I also heard you guys caught a car burglar last night as well! I hope you all have a safe and wonderful holiday season!
Does anyone care, on this site, about the hit and run driver who KILLED a 12 year old boy last week, and still can’t be found? Just saying…
#9 we are confident the LPD is doing their utmost to bring that criminal to justice. Thank you for keeping this in the foremost of our thoughts.
To #4,
How are you Rabbi A? Thanks for bringing back some old memories of Lakewood. You and Rabbi S were very good decoys but you have to remember not to put money in the soda machine on Friday night. You get a bad reputation that way. Have a good Shabbos!
Bill C – 700
Stupid kids r what they r just plain ignorant not even from lkwd
thank you officer j Novak
To #11: Good to hear from you Bill. Hope you and your family are having a wonderful Chanukah. The old days were the best.
to #9: the news was reported on this site, and most comments offered their condolences. as most Jews don’t drive Friday nights, it is unlikely the perpetrator was Jewish. What are you insinuating, by connecting this story to the 12 year old boy? Maybe it was these pranksters who committed the crime…yet some want to let them off.
By the way, a Jewish woman was hit by a car several years ago on a Friday night and killed by hit and run, doesn’t anyone care…?
The punishment should fit the crime, they were eggs and you shouldn’t ruin their lives over eggs. Yes it is a despicable thing they did and we can show them the error of their ways. On the other had there been ANY physical confrontation between them, or a second time with eggs then throw the book at them.
To #15. Yes, I care very much.
Any idea what the kids were doing so late at night
wow! big story it made it to the ap news
job well done pd
What I find interesting about this story is that the five alleged perpetrators’ identities have not been released to the public. Typically, but not always (depending on the age of the person), juveniles’ names are not reported when they are accused of commiting a crime. The same is not true of adults. In this case three adults were charged with a hate crime, but the public does not know their identities. Does anyone know why? Better yet, can someone post a link to a story that identifies the alleged perptrators?
