Police Avert Possible Disaster After Finding Stairway Soaked With Gasoline

crime_scene_with_lpd_tls_picUPDATED: At approximately 1:45 a.m. this morning, police and the fire department responded to an apartment complex after receiving reports of a gas smell, sources tell TLS. Upon arrival, police found a the stairwell carpet soaked in gasoline. Nearby, was a lighter and a partially burnt piece of paper, apparently attempting to ignite the building.

Police evacuated the apartments while they investigated.

Detectives and CIU are investigating. TLS-CCP.

UPDATE: Detective Lieutenant Paul Daly tells TLS, the liquid – initially believed to be gasoline – turned out to be WD-40, but it appears the intoxicated suspect believed it was gasoline at the time.

The building he apparently attempted to burn down, was where his ex-wife resided, Daly Says.

A suspect found at the top of the stairs laying in a puddle of WD-40 was taken into custody, Daly said.

Arson officials responded to the scene as well.
