PHOTOS: Wheelchair-bound patient, other passengers, escape burning van in Lakewood

A wheelchair-bound patient was among several passengers who managed to escape a burning van this afternoon in Lakewood, officials say.

The fire broke out in the van around 3:30 PM on Route 88.

When police first received the call, it was reported a person was trapped inside, but upon arrival, all parties had been safely removed.

The cause of the fire was not immediately available.

  1. Lakewood 2nd Assistant Fire Chief, Steve Mulholland, and his son were passing by and immediately radioed for help and proceeded to rescue two invalid victims, among others, from the burning vehicle. Their quick action most certainly contributed to a positive outcome.

  2. LFD Assistant Chief Steve Mulholland and his son drove by in their personal vehicle and noticed the fire. They immediately jumped out and saved the wheelchair bound individual!
    Kudos to them for their great work right in the nick of time.
    Bhashgocha pratis they were in the right place at the right time!
