PHOTOS: Vermont Avenue Extension in Lakewood To Finally Open

After years of waiting, residents this week will finally be able to drive on Vermont Avenue in Lakewood.

The Vermont Avenue extension is an expanded 40-foot wide roadway from Route 70 to Chestnut Street. The road will provide a new north-south travel corridor for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists between Toms River and Lakewood, and is expected to ease traffic in the area.

The road is expected to open this Friday.

A groundbreaking event for this road was held in 2017.

    • 7 years is really too long for a road to be completed… Around 1970, governor Brendan Byrne said Route 9 will be dualized until Toms River. Do the math! Route 9 in Howell was dualized since, because that stretch of roadway was nicknamed “Killer 9”

  1. be happy you got something, its thanks to the chasidisha askoonim, the old Lakewood- James st still has no sidewalks, Friday night when we walk to gissingers shul from Williams we need to walk in the street, and this is old Lakewood, so be happy a brand new area is getting a road.
