The Toms River Fire Training Center, August “Gus” Forte Training Center, held its 2025 Summer Firefighter Level 1 & 2 Graduation on Wednesday, August 27, at Ocean County College’s Gateway Building. The event marked an important milestone for dozens of new firefighters from across the county, including several recruits from Lakewood.
The evening began with a procession of recruits, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a benediction. A moving moment of silence was held to honor fallen firefighters and survivors, accompanied by the Jersey Shore Pipes & Drums and Shamrock & Thistle Pipes & Drums performing “Amazing Grace.”
Director Richard Gorman of the Toms River Fire Training Center delivered opening remarks before the graduation of recruits was formally conducted. Each firefighter took the Oath of Office, pledging to faithfully and impartially serve their community and uphold the Constitution and mission of the fire service.
Following the oath, the program continued with the presentation of the Spike Baran Award, a guest speaker, and a special video presentation. The evening concluded with closing remarks and a benediction from Bishop Kenneth J. Reihl, chaplain of the Toms River Fire Department.
The event was attended by officials from Toms River Fire Districts #1 and #2, members of the Board of Fire Commissioners, administrative staff, and instructors who guided the recruits through their rigorous training, and family and friends.
Graduates included several Lakewood residents who completed their firefighter training through the Toms River Fire Training Center.
