The good news? You can get a Parve donut for as little as $6.99.

And believe it or not, a test batch was sold out quickly.

Would you buy a donut for $7-$8?

Here’s a look at some of them.

  1. ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!! What has the world come to??? $7 or $8 for a 5 minute enjoyment A DONUT .. this should be banned… people can’t afford basic essential and then this… Even if someone could afford it…. it’s a donut…. Imagine 10 kids , that’s $80. That an entire Shabbos meal for some people.

  2. If there is enough money floating around Lakewood to even consider pricing a donut at such a price, why are the local schools and tzedokos underfunded?

  3. What a shame that less then a week after Rabbi Reisman’s riveting Drasha at the Thursday night session of the Aguda Convention we have already taken the Torah Vodaas Rosh Yeshiva’s words and ignored them. So sad.

  4. What’s the shaileh ?! Its a hiddur mitzvah. According to the shulchal a rich, there is a minhag to eat fried foods. So an $8 donut is a hiddur in that mitzva. As opposed to spending $800 on an esrog holder which is Zero hiddur for the mitzva.
And, I had one last yr. They’re insanely delicious.
By one, or 6, for ur sons’ Rebbe. Itll be the best $48 u ever spent.

    • Woah… Ganef? I agree with the sentiment that they should not be making or marketing these. The ‘disgusting gashmiyus’ and the better spend of money… especially in a city like Lakewood… but he is not a Ganef. The donuts take time, expertise and expensive ingredients that bring it to this value. This is not a regular donut, just overpriced. There is more in the donut and the process. As such, Ganef would not be the right word here. Just saying.

    • “Heavenly” is Yiras Shomayim.
Maybe these donuts are delicious, mouth-watering and luscious.i wonder if this is what the Macabbees had in mind when they vanquished the Greeks.

      • One of my pet peeves is when people use the term “heavenly” or “heaven” to describe something that is quite the opposite. there is no gashmiyus in heaven, so develop a taste for it hear, and you will be severely disappointed.

  5. Much better choice than spending/losing it in Atlantic City. Doughnut buy the doughnut, I walked away a winner! It’s definitely a gamble, you’ll spend way more than you were intending, irresistible, you’ve been warned!!. It’s human, prove that you are human click the doughnut!!!

  6. Men, but
Y it for your wives. Is cheaper than jewelry. Definitely simchas yom tov. I’m from brooklyn. I heard they’re absolutely delicious. If your worried about taivos, eat it on Shabbos.

  7. You have to put it in perspective. how much is the average mortgage each month in Lakewood assuming your not on section 8.
How much is schar limud a month per child in lakewood?(assuming u pay full or close to full?
If you work out the numbers 899 for a donut is really not that much.

  8. Supply and demand – Beauty of a capitalistic market if you want you can also get donuts for 50 cents. Same as all industries in America.
Enjoy if you are willing to pay!!!!
    .

  9. These donuts look delicious and are really gorgeous, I hope to taste one this Chanukah! Hatzlocha and I hope you are super successful with your business, hatzlocha!

  11. Yes, please listen to Rabbi Yisroel Reisman at the Aguda convention on Torah anytime.
This has nothing to do with being frum, this will never make you happy…

  12. Please post the pictures on the outdoor scoop on route 9, I’ll get a much better idea seeing it full size.
You guys really know how get my tastebuds excited, wow!
Next post: Most expensive sushi & steak, Ice cream, car lease, etc. What a holy nation we are!

  13. I recommend that everyone try at least 1!

They are soo good! Yes, expensive but the best donut you have ever tasted!

(no I am not affiliated with any company that makes these)

  14. There will be tremendous Din Vcheshbon for people who WASTE so much on a Donut
Don’t believe me see R Moshe on “Vahyei Lee Shor Vchamor” – the other PShat
YOU THINK HASHEM GAVE YOU $$ TO WASTE LIKE THAT
give it to me I could use it for a lot more basic needs

  15. After meah va’esrim the Rebona Shel Olam will ask, did you try those delicious chanukah donuts that was made for you. All those that refused will have to face the din v’cheshbon!

  16. They definitely look delicious and artistic! The problem is the way the doughnuts are advertised is asking for people to comment on the excessive price. “The most expensive doughnut in Lakewood”…? what’s the point in advertising it like that. The shop and the doughnuts should be liked for it’s quality not quantity. Those delicious doughnuts can be used in a good way and in a bad way. If one wants to buy a special treat for their wife for example then they can go and decide if they would spend $8 on this doughnut, which would be good for a relationship. But it is bad if all we are doing with this ad is flaunting the fact that people can afford an $8 doughnut especially when it’s not the norm. Absolutely no point. This is sad since as yiddin we shouldn’t make a big deal of all the gashmiyus- yet at the same time gashmiyus can be used for the good- like the example of buying the doughnut for your spouse. Again, the way this was advertised is just wrong and not aligned with a Yiddish hashkafa.

  17. fascinating how all anyone considers is the price and the taste. Could there be something else that matters too? Do you not know that dozens of CHILDREN in Lakewood have Type 2 diabetes? Hello?

  18. I get the feeling that this news report was meant to get feedback, the lashon hara kind. You should remove this post. This is not an ordinary donut, it’s a masterpiece. If one doesn’t want, let them not buy. But, don’t bash the store even indirectly. They are beautiful donuts. Such sales have a purpose even though they aren’t everyone’s go to donut.

  19. Maybe they should set up a jar by the register asking for $8 towards Tomchei Shabbos with every purchase? This way it can be a true hiddur mitzvah! “Food” for thought; It’s harder to spend on a REAL d’oraysa. It’s always easier to rationalize & convince ourselves what we are doing is correct. If you really want to support the business buy one for someone downtrodden or as a hakaras hatov gift without succumbing to your own tayvos.

  20. Dear TLS: by posting this, you are inviting a lot of negative comments. I’m sure it was not your intention but you are the cause of public shaming of the store and it’s owners.

  21. This is brilliant. For all the negative comments, people are still discussing the donuts, and curious about how an expensive donut costs. That’s publicity.

And please stop complaining that it’s a waste to spend on donuts instead of Tzedaka. Do you complain to people in $1m houses instead of a townhome? Do you shame the women walking out of Brenda’s for not going to Kohl’s? Or pushing a bugaboo instead of a Graco? No. I can’t afford a mansion or a $6 donut. But I can’t fault the people that can.

    • I find it hilarious that everyone here took the bail. This is a marketing gimmick. Do you think TLS would just post a negative story about a business? This ad was meant to stir everyone up and everyone did just that! Great marketing!

  22. Now we know the answer to the question of the Bais Yosef, why we celebrate eight days of Chanukah, because the price of the donuts is eight dollars!

  23. WHAT?? VEY!!! Do you think for a second this is the shtut reb aaron made for us??? Raboisai, out of town ie brooklyn etc have heavily infiltrated our makom taira!! I wonder what reb Simcha B will have to say… this CAN NOT BE A MAILA!! Mamish a yareeda that we all need to mun our self for allowing.

  24. DId any of you ever buy a Belgian Waffle?? Delicious. Well, they usually cost even more than $8. These don’t look like plain donuts they look like those Belgian Waffles plus …. Unless my eyes are playing tricks on me, $8 is a very reasonable price for whatever this so called ‘donut’ is.

  25. Get one of these for an anti-vaxx friend,it will help relieve the stress they are experiencing. Offer them a dozen if they vaxx there kids!
Now that would be a hiddur mitvah!

  26. I would suggest that a new question be added to financial aid applications to private schools. Ask if the parents buy $8 donuts before assessing their financial need.

  27. To all those saying that you should give this money to tzedakah, before you ate out in a fancy restaurant that costs $90 bucks per person, did you also think about giving it to tzedaka first. Its just a matter of perspective.

  28. As others have already mentioned this is simply good marketing. This is not meant for everyone. I do not think this is even meant for kids. Would I buy? No but I love the pictures and the idea!

It’s a good idea for your spouse or business vendors etc…

There was a story the other day of a popcorn maker in Monsey who makes gourmet popcorn. It’s not cheap either.

In Monsey there is an ad in the local paper for an “ice cream” donuts. Also looks very good.

I love the creativity going on in the Kosher world. Keep it up!

  29. If we’re talking about outrageous new “norms” in indulgence, the recipes in many Jewish publications, especially before YomTov, are equally outrageous. Even though it’s a few years old already, this trend of fussing and fussing and fussing again with your food is equally off-putting. The recipes with 21 steps, or the cutting and shaping and filling and rolling and slicing and then shaping again and drizzling and layering and and and…. it’s quite excessive in my opinion, even when it only costs in time and not in $$. Then again, we can say about both the waste of time & energy, and the waste of money — that if someone’s looking to expend oodles of one or the other, food is a rather benign outlet, if certainly not inspirational. To each his own!
