VIDEO & PHOTOS: Lakewood House Fire Under Investigation

oaklandA fire broke out inside a home on South Oakland Street this evening while the homeowners were away, police say.

The fire started around 6:30 PM, and smoke was seen billowing from the windows. The fire was contained before it could spread further, officials said.

All Lakewood’s fire stations responded to the scene, along with the Brick Fast Team.

A hose stretched across Route 88 forced police to shut the state road for around 45 minutes, causing heavy backups.

The Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the incident.

  1. Is the house uninhabitable? Do the residents have any where to stay? Do they need donations- clothes, toys, household items, etc.? Why is there not anything mentioned about the family?

  2. Cause I made the choice not to speak to anyone. My husband and I are ok I just rented a room for two nights at the best western.. The brunt of the damage was in the kitchen so were told it could be fixed it was an accident nobody was hurt so all and all I’d say that it’s handled

  3. Please explain why a ladder truck worth almost 800.000 is needed for a house with a total height of 12′ i, oh yea that’s right it was taken away from the volunteers for (moderated) and his crew and (moderated).

  4. Look I don’t know about why the ladder truck was used I personally don’t care. The whole house wasn’t destroyed it was the kitchen that’s where the damage was it’ll get fixed. I’m just trying to stay positive about the situation, but there’s always gotta someone making it about something else

  5. @ Please Explain,
There are many other operational uses for a ladder truck other than to reach heights. In certain cases, as in surround and drown, it’s extremely effective to have an available water source from up above over a wide area, for example. Some hard to reach areas can be reached with a ladder, that’s not necessarily a height issue. The truck can also be used for rescue ops. Most departments will send an engine and a ladder to almost every call, even for a car fire for instance. We shouldn’t be any different. One never knows when the ladder will be needed, hence it should always be dispatched. No one wants the responsibility of losing someone because a ladder truck was not available in time. It is imperative to have a ladder at every call.
Which leads us to your second point. This is not about taking from the volunteers, it is not an ego trip. It’s all about safety. The fact of the matter is that for far too long the ladder was not responding to calls in an efficiently timely manner if they responded at all. This is because the hook n ladder company lost many members due to the Garcia law among other reasons. This was simply unsustainable. We can’t continue to rely on mutual aid from other townships. They can’t get here in time, not to mention the continued cost when we have perfectly good trucks in town. When other options failed it was decided to have the career companies man the truck. It is only way at present time to adequately and safely cover the town. Once more members are trained the volunteers will be able to ‘take the truck back’.
    It’s all about safety folks.
How about a big thank to all the fire fighters, career and volunteers, who continue to serve this town, responding any time, any weather, often at risk to life. Leave the poloticing to the poloticians. Appreciation goes a lot farther than critism.
