President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump today welcomed Edan Alexander, a New Jersey native who had been held hostage by Hamas for nearly two years, to the White House.
Edan, a 20-year-old American-Israeli citizen, was captured on October 7, 2023, during the brutal Hamas terror attack on southern Israel. At the time, he was serving in the Israel Defense Forces and was among over 250 people taken into Gaza during the assault. His name became known across the U.S. and Israel, as his family and supporters launched a tireless campaign calling for his release.
After 584 days in captivity, Edan was freed as part of a broader diplomatic effort involving Israeli officials, the United States, and international mediators. President Trump reportedly played a direct role in pushing for his release during ongoing negotiations.
His family, who reside in Bergen County, were present for the White House visit, which symbolized the end of a long and painful ordeal.
Edan’s release comes as efforts continue to bring home the remaining hostages still believed to be held in Gaza.
