The Lakewood First Aid & Emergency Squad on Tuesday evening held an extrication training utilizing all-new equipment -including a Hurst Spreader, Hurst Cutter – also known as “Jaws of Life” – and Rescue Stabilizing Jacks.
The training, which took place at Department of Public Works complex, simulated overturned vehicles and trapped patients.
” The new equipment is replacing 20 year old tools and will allow for quicker and more effective extrications, especially on newer model vehicles that are made different than they used to,” says Extrication Chief Ari Statfeld.
Lakewood First Aid President Dawn Williams said, “although this was a very large purchase for the squad, these tools were very much needed and are invaluable when seconds count.” Dawn also thanked Captain Ralph Lasry for his roll in making this financially feasible.
The Squad’s Extrication Team consists of about 15 out of the 40 volunteer members of the Lakewood First Aid Squad. Lakewood First Aid responds to approximately 1,000 calls annually.
Special Operations Commander Moe Heinemann thanked Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein, Police Chief Greg Meyer and DPW Director Pat Donnelly for assisting the squad in putting together this training.
