A major wildfire in Jackson’s Cassville section has led to the evacuation of at least six homes, with a total of 25 threatened.
At a press conference this afternoon, a spokesperson for the New Jersey Forest Fire Service (NJFFS) said the fire was at 75 acres but is expected to grow to about 300 acres as crews are continuing back burning operations to help contain the fire. As of 8 PM the Fire has grown to 175 Acres and is 20% contained.
At 9:00 this evening, evacuated residents will be allowed to return to their homes, Jackson Mayor Mike Reina told TLS.
However, local roads are expected to remain closed through Thursday.
Several horses from nearby farms were also moved to safety due to heavy smoke.
The “Shotgun” wildfire was reported just before 1:00 p.m. this afternoon near the Central Jersey Rifle & Pistol Club on S. Stump Tavern Road and has been burning ever since.
Multiple nearby fire departments and other agencies also responded to protect the structures threatened by the fire including, Lakewood FD/EMS Rehab unit, Lakewood First Aid and Chaveirim of CJ.
At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown.
