I keep them closed and I find the same thing
And if you free the animal, it continues to terrorize the neighborhood? Those are vicious creatures that will scratch, bite and claw and should be removed out of populated areas.
It’s very easy to discourage them. Don’t overfill your cans, keep the lids closed and wrap a bungee cord across the top like we did in our neighborhood. They will go back to what’s left of the woods. When you leave an easy meal out for them then they will continue to show up for dinner.
I had a raccoon also. I keep my garbage closed with a tight bungee strap. It really helps
