PHOTOS: Chai Lifeline NJ/PA Illuminates CHOP Over Chanukah

The uplifting light of Chanukah filled the halls of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) on the sixth night of Chanukah, as a moving menorah-lighting ceremony brought light and warmth to patients, families, and staff. Doctors, nurses, administrators, and patients joined together to partake in the celebration. For those unable to attend in person, the ceremony was broadcast live to every patient’s room throughout the hospital.

Rabbi Sruli Fried, MSW, Director of Chai Lifeline NJ/PA, addressed the large crowd, sharing the inspiring message of Chanukah. Rabbi Fried spoke about the neis Chanukah and the power of even a single light to dispel darkness.

“The story of Chanukah reminds us that even a small light can illuminate the darkest moments,” said Rabbi Fried. “The miracle of the oil lasting eight days instead of one reminds us that, with faith and perseverance, even the seemingly impossible becomes possible.”

Rabbi Fried drew a parallel to the work being done at CHOP. “We give thanks for the miracles of the past, but we are also witnesses to miracles today. Here at CHOP, doctors and researchers work tirelessly to bring light and hope into the lives of children and their families. What may begin as a small light—a new discovery, an experimental treatment—can grow into something miraculous.”

Following his moving remarks, Rabbi Fried lit the menorah. The ceremony continued with a rendition of Ma’oz Tzur and other traditional Chanukah songs, performed by violinist Sara Rosner, whose son Yossi A”H was treated at CHOP several years ago, and Moshe Friedman, who performed a beautiful rendition of “Shomati Es Tefilasecha” on the keyboard. The music filled the hospital atrium with a sense of unity and celebration for all in attendance.

Chai Lifeline extends a heartfelt thanks to the Spiritual Care Department at CHOP and Seacrest Studios for their partnership in making this meaningful event possible. Together, they created a night to remember, bringing the light of Chanukah to everyone present.
