It wasn’t just another building. For about 30 years, thousands of Talmidim walked through the doors of Yeshivah Tiferes Torah (YTT) on East End Avenue, so the taking down of the building Monday was understandably an emotional event.
“He was standing there crying,” a bystander said of Rabbi Yisroel Gelbwachs, the founder of YTT as he watched them tear down the building. “Thousands upon thousands of hours of Yiddishe Chinuch went into the place he built with sweat and tears.”
Besides for being the Cheder for thousands of Talmidim, it was also the founding location of Avos Ubanim, the father and son learning program that has grown to nearly 100 locations in Lakewood, and thousands of locations around the world.
But seeing how moved Rabbi Gelbwachs was as the memories were being torn down, left a strong impression on bystanders.
“That’s a Mechanech,” said a parent.
In November, the Yeshivah with over 400 Talmidim moved from their flagship building into a brand new and much larger campus (pictured) on Oak Street, expanding the Mosad, and continuing to give the children of the first Talmidim the same sterling experience their fathers received.
