VIDEO & PHOTOS: Lakewood breaks ground for Vermont Avenue extension

Lakewood Township officials this morning broke ground for the long-awaited extension of Vermont Avenue.

The Vermont Avenue Extension will be an expanded 40-foot wide roadway with sidewalks on the west side for its entire length from Route 70 to Chestnut Avenue. With the completion of the roadway extension, Vermont Avenue will provide a new north-south travel corridor for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists between Toms River and Lakewood.

Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles said, “This is the first step in alleviating many of the traffic concerns in the southern end of town. When complete, the Vermont Avenue Extension will offer an alternate north south route, easing congestion on both New Hampshire Avenue and Route 9.”

The sponsors of the Vermont Avenue Extension are Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles, Committeeman Mike D’Elia, Lakewood Township Manager Tom Henshaw, Senator Robert Singer, and Justin Flancbaum, Lakewood Township MUA (LTMUA).

Along with the proposed road improvements, Lakewood MUA water service improvements will also be installed in the project area, including a new eight-inch water main that will connect two existing mains, one located along Route 70 and the other located along Chestnut Avenue. This water main extension will improve service and reliability to local LTMUA users.

    • Already complaining? How about first thanking these men for getting this underway. Thank you committee and whoever else was involved. This will be a great upgrade for the town.

      • Its not complaining if you ask a good pointed question, there is nothing wrong with trying to find out if they planed this properly because the flip side is opening the street – realize there is a traffic jam at the intersection, and then put in a traffic light “study” so in 20 years there will hopefully be a light….

  1. Why can’t they just do it the way they should without any fanfare and pomp? It’s our tax money going to the garbage when they make events out of nothing. Just do the work and enjoy our tax gelt

  2. Of course this will be great for traffic. Now the only North-South roads are route 9 and New Hampshire. Having this will add another route and connect the south side of town.

  3. Congratulations Lakewood Township Officials. This additional N/S access street (Vermont Ave) will greatly help with the Chestnut Street – New Hampshire Ave intersection.

A traffic light at the new intersection would help to maintain traffic control. This is an innovative approach to traffic safety issues in Lakewood.
