This picture was taken last night at Lake Carasaljo by a local resident taking a stroll around the lake.
It’s been a couple years since the town vacated Tent City, but it appears homelessness in Lakewood still exists.
According to the resident, several homeless people were seen in the area of the lake.
Beware Tent City 2.0 if this isnt taken care of asap…

Tent city was forced out with no place for the homeless to go. Now we have folks taking pictures of someone who is in need. Ever think that that might be embarrassing to them. Where is the compassion? We don’t know this individuals circumstance. Homelessness is not always caused by drugs and alcohol. Start advocating for these individuals instead of trying to get rid of them like they are a nuance. They are people for crying out loud and should be treated as such. If a park bench is the only place they have to lay their head in town because the town does not want to provide them shelter then we have failed as human beings. Learn their story before passing judgement.
These are not people in need, homeless people are 99.9% mentally ill or drug attics they need to be locked up in asylums not on our streets
these are the vulnerable of society, how come Lakewood doesn’t have shelters? We need to show compassion, I will start a campaign to bring shelters into Lakewood, I didn’t know the issue existed now I do. It should be a humane shelter, meaning no questions asked.
when tent city was closed everyone who lived there was given housing for the year. The hope was this would help the people living get there lives back on track. After year was up they then moved to howell to another tent city. That property was sold and each person living there was again offered some type of help but that leader of tent city didn’t want to take the help. So what do you do for someone who is offered help but doesn’t take it.
You guys sound like a bunch of Democrats! Tell them to work and then they will have money to pay for rent… No we should not make our town a place for them… If they live here they would have a house or apt through HUD… We are not responsible to take care of squatters in our town!!
We need to show compassion for every person. This picture should make us say, “THere are homeless people in Lakewood. How can we help?” Not, “There are homeless people in Lakewood. How can we get rid of them?” A Yid has rachmanus.
WHY IS THIS NEWS. for what reason do you feel this necessary to post on a news web site. Why dont you take a picture of ducks swimming with a post “DUCKS SWIMMING IN LAKEWOOD”. Come on, if, you want to be a relevant news site, post news.
I don’t know what the homeless census is in Lkwd (does Lkwd even participate?). I would suggest that the Bergen county model has been successful and adopted by counties outside of NJ.
There are homeless people everywhere in America. Most are have emotional problems and actually don’t mind being homeless they just want to be left alone, Some would love help and a roof over their head. A few are just people who have come on hard times and with no support and are stuck.
Homelessness is a problem all around the US without a simple solution and yes even Lakewood is part of the United States and shares in its problems.
that’s why we need shelters.
I agree with devora, we need to show compassion, I am getting involved with the coalition for the homeless and maybe this way we can build a shelter right here in Lakewood, one that welcomes all no questions asked, undocumented included. remember the Torah says Yidden are bnei rachmanim.

I feel it’s the right thing to do to help these people get back on their feet. We don’t know what kind of lives they have lived. We shouldn’t judge them.
I hope they get the help they need.
For all of you here who said we should build a shelter. Sure… I’m totally with you… just as long as its next door to your house, not mine. You OK with that? You know what the issue with Lakewoods last homeless camp/tent city was? The people next door, ie Arlington area had to deal with the crime and the drugs. So if you are OK with that next door to you… go right ahead and advocate.
One lady has been living there for a few months already. Recently she was joined by a second and third person. Although I feel bad about them, 1) if they are not sent away, that entire area will turn in to a homeless shelter before you blink 2) supposedly the original lady has family and she refuses to live with them 3) it is very uncomfortable to walk by there. Especially when I pass by Shabbos morning with my children and she’s standing there putting on her makeup or whatever other private things she’s busy doing. It feels like we’re walking through someone’s bedroom when in fact it is public township property. Not to mention the collection of shopping carts that’s are probably taken from local supermarkets. Of course the names of the stores are taped over.
This should remind everyone to be grateful if we have our basic needs met. And of course have Rachmanus on people that are in a tough situation, even if they are on drugs or engaged in other unhealthy behaviors. Do any of us know how we would live had we grown up in different circumstances? Let’s not judge. Our job is to be a light onto the nations!!
We need to show compassion to all these Homeless people and build a large Homeless Shelter in Ocean county/ Monmouth county. I say Build the Homeless shelter in Howell or Plumstead Township where there is lots of open land or maybey even Tom’s River or Brick. Not Lakewood as Lakewood allready has a Lot of Public Housing and is allready Congested
