PHOTO: An incident which left a man with an apparent gunshot wound before a crash, is under investigation.
According to preliminary reports, emergency personnel were dispatched to a pedestrian struck call at a local school, and upon arrival found a man laying on the ground.
However, upon further investigation, it appeared the driver had been shot through his window, and then crashed his vehicle into another while fleeing, sources said.
“Upon arrival, it appeared that the victim, a 25 year old Lakewood man had a facial injury consistent with a possible gunshot wound,” Detective Sergeant Greg Staffordsmith said.
“It definitely looked like a bullet hole in his window and a bullet injury,” a source who spoke on condition of anonymity told TLS during the initial investigation.
However, police say the wound that initially looked like a gunshot wound, wasn’t.
“After further investigation it was determined that while exiting the parking lot in his Honda Accord he collided with a Ram Truck that was operated by a 55-year-old man from Browns Mills, NJ,” Staffordsmith says. “The force of the collision was enough to push the victim and his car back approximately 25 feet. He then exited his car but not prior to putting it in park. A witness to the crash stated that the Honda then rolled over the man knocking him to the ground.”
“He was transported by Lakewood EMS and paramedics from MONOC to Jersey Shore University Medical Center where his facial injury was deemed to have been caused by a piece of flying debris in the crash and not a firearm,” Staffordsmith says.
Despite those findings, some officials tell TLS they still believe this was a gunshot wound.
“Those injuries did not look like MVA injuries, or injuries from the airbag,” other sources told TLS.
The victim is listed in stable condition, Staffordsmith said
