Penalties Not Reducing Number Of DWIs In N.J.

dwi tls picIncreasingly stiff penalties and years of public awareness campaigns appear to have had little impact on the number of drunken-driving arrests on New Jersey’s roads and highways, according to a report. The 27,838 drunken-driving arrests last year were the fewest recorded in the past decade, statistics from the New Jersey State Police show. But the figure represents a decline of just 3 percent from the previous year, and the number of arrests has held relatively steady over the past decade, peaking just shy of 30,500 in 2007.

As they have every year since 1999, police departments across New Jersey are taking advantage of a federal grant program that has doled out millions of dollars to put more police officers on the street over the holidays.

The idea is to crack down on drunken driving at a time when New Year’s celebrations and office holiday parties can make the temptation to drive buzzed even stronger. Read more in Star Ledger.

  1. While I think public hanging is an idea that we should seriously consider ( 🙂 ), taking away driving priveledges and car and prohibiting future automobile ownership completely (this is with Federal backing) should qualify ass an adequate deterrent. Perhaps adding in a mandatory 30 day jail sentence, too. DUI kills/injures far more people per year than those drop-side cribs we banned a few weeks back. Time to treat it as the danger that it is!

  2. why cant the cops hang outside bars and just keep on pulling over drunks that get into cars which would make the twnsp money as the tickets are very costly

  3. im with gornished on this one. Definitely publicly hang all drunk drivers. If they get killed then pull em out of their graves and hang their mangled corpses on telephone polls to scare off potential drunk drivers.

There is a method to the madness. It will def take a crack at drunk driving although Budweiser might freak.
