UPDATED: [VIDEO] Meshulach Fatally Struck by Vehicle on Rt. 9

ped strk rt 9VIDEO: A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle on Route 9 this evening, officials confirm to TLS.

The pedestrian, described as a middle-aged Meshulach from New York, was reportedly crossing Route 9 at 11th Street approximately 6 p.m. when he was struck. It appears the victim was either thrown or dragged by the vehicle, sources say.

Multiple Hatzolah and Lakewood First Aid members responded to the scene where they found the patient in Traumatic Arrest, officials say. They immediately began performing CPR on the victim.

The victim was transported to MMCSC in critical condition. He was pronounced at the hospital.

Route 9 is shut in both directions between 11th and 12th Streets for the investigation.

In a sad twist to the story, the Meshulach was collecting because he had no income due to injuries sustained in a car accident. He frequented Novaminsk in New York.

UPDATE 10:20 p.m. The Niftar will be brought to New York this evening for the Levaya, and the Kevurah will take place in Eretz Yisroel.

  1. when are people going to start wearing reflectors at night? I’ve witnessed too many NEAR-ACCIDENTS
Please please if you are walking at night wear a reflector its for your own good. You don’t realize how drivers really cant see you until youre the one driving.

  2. I am living in Lakewood over 30 years. No one ever dreamed of crossing Rte. 9 until they passed the stupid crosswalk law. Route 9 is not Avenue J or 13th Avenue. It always was and still is a highway. Rabosai, please have Rachmonus on yourselves and your families. Do not cross Rte. 9 unless you are by a light and it is green.

  3. Hashem yerachem. If his family was struggling till now imagine how it is for them now or better yet so you can imagine what their going through we should only hear good news

  4. I was driving down route 9 right before I got the text about someone struck and there was a guy with a hat standing in the right lane! the guy in front of me swerved around him so I swerved too and honked very loudly and he didn’t budge and all the cars behind me had to swerve around him. I wonder if this is the same guy who got hit a few moments later.

  5. I agree! The crosswalks on Route 9 are very dangerous. People think if they cross on the crosswalk all cars will stop for them. The problem is it’s a four lane road and to get all four lanes to stop at the same time is almost impossible. I’ve stopped for people to cross but when the other lanes keep going I continue because the person will never be able to cross and I can’t hold up traffic. The only safe place to cross is at a traffic light or crossing guard. Also, the crosswalks should not be used at night because it’s impossible to see someone crossing until you’re close enough where it’s too late to stop.

  6. Its just sad that in general people think its safe to run into oncoming traffic, ive seen it growing up and still see it to this day, almost hit a couple people but it was based on their poor decisions

  7. Observed an orthodox Jewish make this evening wearing a reflective coat. Very visible and still dressed conservatively. Only if everyone else would follow suit when walking at night. BE SAFE out there.

  8. 100’s of yeshiva guys cross here several times a day. Near accidents happen all the time. When will lakewood start caring about its lives and put traffic lights? Excuses cost lives.

  9. Only by a light! Its NNNOOOT POOOOOSIBLE to cross with out it. N of course extremely dangerous, they should pu up signs to only cross by street lights n the town should put up more street lights that are zinked so it coinsudes with the other lights so they font make the cars stop every 2 blocks.

  10. 1.Divert US 9 to New Hampshire Ave
2.Put Madison Ave partially in a trench.
3.Put pedestrian bridges over Madison Avenue and put in a central divider as in Howell.
These are accidents waiting to happen.

  11. STOP THE RAGE AND FACE THE FACTS:The problem is simple as pie. Lakewood although a town filled with the light of torah, our busy busy streets are plunged into complete darkness. Drivers cannot see the people in the street so day after day we are hit with terrible tragedy stricken news wich is becoming unbarable. The answer is PUT UP LIGHTS TO STOP THE DEATH. If the town can’t do it we the people are responsible to do so @ least on the busy streets such as rt 9,forest,county line etc. We should start right here on the lakewood scoop by setting up a LIGHT UP LAKEWOOD fund. This can save many many lives. Besuros tovos

  12. While many of us who live in this town are guilty of this, I think there’s an added liability with meshulachim that come from E”Y and are not familiar with everything in this town- regardless of how many times they’ve been here. How dangerous Route 9 is one of them but I have a few others . I really think that Toimceich Tzedakah when giving out the Ishur, they should advise the meshulachim of these facts- maybe even a print-out, as I’m sure there is additional information that could really help them.

  13. I agree with Jack RE: installing a traffic light. However I believe we should cahnge RT 9 traffic in Lakewood to 30 MPH this way we can have more REACTION TIME & we’ll be able to STOP & avoid injury. Let’s keep Lakewoos SAFE!!

  14. Just like its a law to wear seat belts it should be a law to wear a reflector at night….. So many times I see men wearing all black on night crossing the street while talking on the phone oblivious to the cars around them

  15. Rt 9 is a state hway, all issues, changes etc have to be done at the State offices. a new traffic light does not get approved before 2 deaths RL”L

People going out at night & especially in wet weath MUST Wear Reflectors.
for those who do not like yellow , there is black reflective material & strips that can be glued on clothing!

  16. You can’t but a traffic light on every block but you can walk to the light and then cross the street. I have driven on Route 9 for over 50 years and see people crossing in the middle of the block, not looking etc. Common sense needs to be used . reflectors on clothing should be a must at night. I see families walking so close to the road with small children, one missed step and you have a dead child. People need to use their heads and pay attention. Traffic lights are not the answer, you need to cross when no cars are coming and go to a corner to do it. RIP to this person,

  17. Who will be raising millions for his family like they did for the victims in Israel, or will their needs be ignored because he was a poor schlepper?

  18. Rte. 9 is a state Highway. Only the state can put in traffic lights, not Lakewood. However people should definitely wear reflectors at night and not assume that just because there are white crossing lines painted on the street, that cars will stop for them. It may work on Forest Ave., but, it doesn’t and can’t work on Madison Ave. I don’t think we need more traffic lights, people just have to use more seichel when crossing. If the lights would be timed together, it would always be possible to have a break in traffic to make crossing easier.

  19. Maybe we can get a few people to sponsor reflector belts. – one per family. If they’re given out free by let’s say, by a Chanukah gathering or such, people will be more likely to use them!

  20. Hmm… all I here are crickets chirping… absolute silence about how to help this family.

Does it really take being killed by terrorists to get people to raise money for a family that just lost their father?

A day after that incident, nearly a million dollars was pledged for them.

    This is a disgrace.

I would respectfully suggest that Ira Zlotowitz and others who can to step up and do something for these poor (literally) people.

  21. Another eitzah: Meshulachim should not disturb the tefillos of everyone in Lakewood. Without exaggeration, somewhere between ten to twelve meshulachim disturb my Shacharis EVERY SINGLE DAY (except Shabbos).

The people who drive them are responsible for zilzul tefillah and interrupting our meager attempts to daven with kavana in exchange for fifty percent of their bounty. That’s just sick.

  22. Daniel, who says your davening is worth more than your giving tzedokoh to these poor unfortunate souls?
The crosswalks can and should be removed immediately. They have no purpose and only cause accidents.
And yes, Tomchei Tzedaka do provide information for meshulachim, as well as reflectors. I do not know what happened here and it is wrong to prejudge anybody.

  23. I have a suggestion to make people cross at the lights only. Put a nice decorative gate/fence (few feet high) along both sides of Madison Ave and have it opened by the lights. Obviously some people will go around them and cross in the street but it will make most sensible people only cross where it is open. It will also enhance the beauty of the Route 9 corridor….

  24. It may be a little difficult for some people to hear, but the ultimate responsibility for avoiding these vehicle-pedestrian accidents falls on the pedestrian in most cases. The pedestrian, applying just a bit of common sense, understands that walking in front of moving vehicles is potentially deadly; that it is much easier for a pedestrian to see approaching vehicles, especially at night, than it is for the vehicles to see them-a vehicle is large, usually noisy and has headlights or running lights or both; that there is no reason in the world to expect a vehicle travelling legally in the traffic lanes of any street to expect pedestrians to be crossing in front of them; that cars move much faster than people and therefore, you can never be too careful in timing your street-crossing attempts; that walking along the side of a traffic lane is very dangerous, especially at night-walking on the shoulder of the road leaves precious little space between a person and a vehicle which only needs to veer a few degrees to close that space and hit the pedestrian;

I’m not trying to blame the victim here-I don’t know what happened, but a lot of comments are ignoring the responsibility of pedestrians besides crossing at crosswalks or lights and wearing reflective clothing. I see many, many instances of people being very careless about the way they interact with vehicular traffic-mothers sometimes wheeling strollers a few inches from the passing cars, bochurim walking casually in the street or crossing without really looking, etc.

People: please be careful out there! Life is so precious to be guarded so carelessly.

  25. Daniel for some reason I don’t think that you’re tefilos are that precious that you can’t be disturbed for the 2 seconds it takes to acknowledge the poor people that have to beg for a few cents that I doubt you give them
Think hard and long and consider yourself lucky that you don’t have to go around disturbing people to beg for parnasa

  26. You’re conflating two issues, laser. Are these sympathetic people? Of course. They are needy people. But the other part of your sentence, which suggests you are familiar with Hashems cheshbonos and that you understand what is “precious” to Hashem and what is not is fairly preposterous. Halacha is kovea. And you cannot adequately address that because you are ignorant or you simply don’t gave an argument. Those who cause the mass disturbance of tefilah btzibur in exchange for a commission are commuting a gross avlah. I

  27. Reflectors needed. The black clothing makes most jewish pedestrians almost stealth in the dark streets that cross most main roads in Lakewood.

  28. Crossing the road where there is not a light is dangerous, especially at nite while wearing black clothing. It is called jaywalking. If tickets were issued for this practice a lot of people would be deterred from doing this. The amount of traffic is astounding and that section of route 9 simply cannot handle the flow especially in this area. Something needs to be done. Talking about it does nothing.reflective belts work. I’ve been able to see people that I would not have seen standing in the middle waiting to finish crossing.
