A wheelchair-bound patient was fatally struck by a vehicle in Lakewood a short time ago.
The accident occurred approximately 12:30 AM at the intersection of Route 9 and John Street.
Video surveillance obtained by TLS shows the man driving through the intersection in his wheelchair, when a vehicle slammed into him, throwing him over 20 feet away.
Emergency personnel arrived on scene and found a patient in traumatic arrest. The patient was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lakewood Police Department and Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office are Investigating the accident.
The area is being shut down for the investigation which is expected to last for a couple of hours.
it is extremely dark at night along that stretch of river avenue from central ave south to prospect street and this will only be corrected either by new construction to replace those old houses which will be properly lit up or by the state installing more streetlights along Rt 9
Nothing to do with being dimly lit. The victim rode his electric wheelchair into the roadway while there was oncoming traffic.
With respect to the deceased, he did cross legaly at a crosswalk. The poor lighting however, would render him practically invisible.
Goose Gossage is incredibly shaken by this tragic news and hopes the family can find comfort especially with the dramatic way the death occurred.
Goose also hopes it will be deemed just an accident with no other factors playing a role in this tragedy.
Gossage out!
Sadly someone’s life was lost may the family find comfort!!
To Td
“The accident occurred “ meaning not on purpose
The video obtained by TLS showed man in intersection not the middle of the road
While not looking to place any blame here, I have seen this individual “drive” his wheelchair unsafely in traffic in this neighborhood as if it were a car. I regret that I didn’t call the police last time I saw it, perhaps a strong warning might have led him to be a little bit more careful.
It was a tragic accident, and while legally a person can cause at a cross walk, that does not mean it is safe to cross at all crosswalks and depend on traffic to be able to stop.
The speed limit on route 9 is 35-40mph and at night with no traffic, the cars move at that speed., making it very difficult to stop if someone crosses when there is oncoming traffic.
May he rest in peace. I feel sorry for the driver. Pedestrian must have reflectors! Otherwise they are bound to be in an accident!!
Rip Fred you will truly be missed. Please have some respect for the family.
isn’t there a shoulder there on the road
