A pedestrian was struck and killed while crossing Route 88 in Brick, police say.
Arthur W. Burke was attempting to walk across State Highway 88 (south to north), approximately 100 feet east of Post Road, directly into traffic, police say. The vehicle attempted to avoid the pedestrian but was unable to and struck him with the right front bumper of the vehicle. The impact caused the pedestrian to strike the windshield. As the vehicle began to slow, the pedestrian fell from the vehicle, onto the curb and grass area on the side of the road.

The pedestrian suffered severe head / internal trauma and was transported to Jersey Shore Regional Trauma Center where he succumbed to his injuries. The passenger in the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was transported to Ocean Medical Center – Brick Hospital for treatment.
State Highway 88 between the interchange and Jack Martin Boulevard and Post Road was closed for several hours.
Traffic Safety Officer David Thergesen of the Brick Township Police Department and Detective Michael Proto of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office are conducting the ongoing investigation.
