Paying A Shadchan On Time

shadchanThe Issur of Bal Talin (prohibition of not paying a worker on the same day) only applies to a worker who was hired by the Ba’al ha’Bayis. If someone provides a service on his own initiative without being prompted, if he provides a benefit to the Ba’al ha’Bayis he is entitled to payment, however the prohibition of Bal Talin doesn’t apply. Therefore a Shadchan (matchmaker) who suggested a Shiduch without being asked to do so must be paid, but if he is not paid on time the Issur of Bal Talin doesn’t apply.

However the Sefer Mishpat Shlomo says (pg 49) that if after the Shiduch was suggested the two sides asked the Shadchan to continue working on it, the issur of Bal Talin would apply since he is no longer working on his own initiative and has become a hired hand of the two families.
