Skydiving returned today to the Lakewood Municipal Airport, nearly half a century after the airport’s sale to private owners halted the practice.
ISkyDive America, a Michigan-based company which operates approximately 12 locations across the country, recently signed a lease with the airport.
Jumpers deploy parachutes above 4,000 feet and follow defined left or right traffic holding patterns based on prevailing winds. These patterns are designed to minimize airspace conflicts and ensure safe descent routes. Parachutes generally take one to two minutes to land after reaching pattern altitude.
Operating procedures for the new parachuting activity have been developed and fine-tuned in conjunction with the various existing users at the airport to enhance the safety profile for the flying community and the general public.
Approximately a dozen people took part in the today’s inaugural jump.
Additional videos and photos will be published soon.
