PHOTOS & VIDEO [UPDATED 8:45 PM] Over 100 marched and held a vigil this evening in support of Tent City’s homeless people. With a Police escort, the protesters marched from Tent City on Cedarbridge Avenue to Red Square, ahead of the Court Hearing in the Lawsuit against Ocean County and Lakewood.
The protesters heard from Minister Steve Brigham, their Attorney Jeff Wild, Rabbi Gold of Beth Am Shalom and others.
The speakers criticized the local Politicians for not allowing them to remain in the woods, and not providing for them shelter.
Officials have long said, that the camp poses a safety hazard for both them and neighboring residents.
The peaceful event lasted approximately an hour. TLS.
whats red square, Moscow?
Who’s rabbi gold?
Why don’t all these bleeding-heart people take 1 in for the winter? After all its better than leaving them in the cold? Oh but of course not! “Not in my back yard” as the saying goes…..
The county needs to build a shelter for these people.
Where is Hershall Herskowitz when the town needs him??
To Mr. Conservative: You keep saying the same thing over and over and over.Enough, no one wants to here this nonsense. How about saying something constructive for a change.
# 6 His name is not Mr. Constructive

Red Square is the colloquial or informal name for Town Square due to it being paved in red brick. The name has been used by long time Lakewood residents for 20+ years at least if not more.
Leave these people be!!!!! My heart breaks for them, in the cold, ice, snow, heat. Remember the old say “There for the grace of God go I”. It could happen to any of us.
we canot get military BIG Tent ?? its good for 75 person
and its nice I live in one .
How come the Mexicans are not homeless?
Not that I want them, or anyone, to be homeless, but I thought America is for the citizens of America and not citizens of other countries!
everyone feels bad for the homeless but yet they were offered housing and declined it what more do they want from us. any person who would be falling on hard times and offered assisted would jump on it right away yet these people are not we can’t force them to take our offer for shelter so they shouldn’t keep complaining that no one cares about them
To #4 anon, #9 Citizen, and others – I do not have first hand knowldege on this matter but my understanding is that alternative shelters (i.e. INDOORS) have in fact been offered in the past by local and County people but some (perhaps many) of the homeless people refused the offer and preferred to stay in the woods. One reason I heard for their refusal is that the shelters do not allow drugs or alcohol use. Again, I have not verified this but that is what I’ve heard.
I passed by around 4PM. I saw them coming by coach bus. Wonder were they imported these folks from. …..
I don’t think anyone has to be homeless. The Mexicans who live here aren’t homeless because they work and pay rent. These people either don’t want to or can’t work. If they can’t work, I am sure there are other solutions than living in the woods. I guess their attitude is – it’s a “free” country and a person can live where he wants as he pleases.
Could you please post where donations for these poor people can be brought I have blankets to donate
To all: Dont be fooled by what you hear. Most of the people that come to Tent City that qualify for social service benefits have taken them . It is mostly the ones that social services has rejected or have given partial help that remain. Some have received Social Service Benefits(1 Yr) but have exausted them. Many of the people in Tent city work but do not make enough to sustain themselves. Some receive Social Security or Disability benefits but it is not enough to pay for a place to live, food etc. Social Services will not let two people combine benefits, therefore if two people wanted to combine benefits and get an apartment together, social services will not allow it and take away there benefits. There are people that have been rejected by Social Services and when they asked what are they supposed to do; Social services has told them to go to Tent City.
As for shelters, the only one available is the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. For years Police from Ocean Countt have been putting people on buses and sending them there. The Atlantic City Mission has grown tired of this and recently filed a 2.2 milion dollar lawsuit against Ocean County for the cost of taking care of the Ocean County homeless for the past 4 years.
Ocean County needs to build a shelter to take care of its own. If they had done this years ago as other counties did, there would be no Tent City and no 2.2 million dollar lawsuit.
“The speakers criticized the local Politicians for not allowing them to remain in the woods, and not providing for them shelter.”
Really??? The government owes us shelter?? What country is this??
Thank you Mr Conservative for your comment.
You are 100% correct.
I believe Mr Conservative was being facetious. He was pointing out that the bleeding-heart liberals want EVERYONE ELSE to pay for the homeless, but they won’t do it themselves.
If they cared so much for the homeless, they wouold each take one into their own home.
TLS Please change # 19 comment from being a to addressed to #17.It should be addressed to #18
Mayor bloomberg was able to get rid of the tents in his city in just 1 night. Maybe Lkwd can hire some of the employees from the NY sanitation dept-they have experience.
TLS Why are you not releasing my comments. I am starting to question what country you live in. In the United States we believe in freedom pf expression “for all” not for just the ones who control the press. You way is the way of Communist countries
i think we should sue the county it is not right what they do. I went down to social servise for 4 years in a row and they would not help me so then i file and appile then they ave me houseing i think we need to call kane in your corner from news 12 new jersey
My Comment not good for you ?? it was not Jewish.
To # 18 In answer to your question this is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Have you forgotten what we stand for as so eloquently stated on the Statue of Liberty plaque:
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
