Opinion: Will The Real Cory Booker Please Stand Up?

By: Shlomo Rudman.U.S. Senator from New Jersey Cory Booker has long professed himself to be a fervent supporter of Jews and the State of Israel.

He would proudly flaunt his relationship with rabbis, say divrei torah at Jewish gatherings and events, and publicy express his devotion to the rights of Jews and the self-determination of Israel.

On Friday, the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, an organization that supports the Boycott, Divest, Sanction (BDS) movement that targets Israeli goods and products, posted a picture on their Twitter page of several of their activists posing with Cory Booker who was holding a sign that read ‘From Palestine To Mexico, All The Walls Have Got To Go’. How could a sitting US Senator, who claims to have deep ties with Jewish people and counts himself as a supporter of Israel, allow himself to be photographed holding such a sign?

If we look more closely, however, the photo seems to be just the tip of the iceberg. Mr. Booker seems to have been on a trajectory which would result in such a picture for several years now.

Since his election to the United States Senate, Cory Booker has slowly shown signs of capitulation to fringe anti-Israel efforts in the Democratic party. He supported the Iran nuclear deal, an agreement Israel was adamantly opposed to, saying it would jeopardize their security. His vote to authorize the Iran deal came even as his most ardent Jewish supporters begged him not to support it. He voted against the Taylor Force Act in committee, a bill which would end payments to the Palestinian Authority if they continued paying terrorists (he backed down and supported the bill after backlash from Jewish groups and an amendment to the bill). Mr. Booker also condemned Donald Trump for proclaiming Jerusalem to be the rightful capital of Israel. In 2012, he was a firm supporter of Jerusalem being recognized as the capital of Israel, saying so publicly in a speech at the Democratic National Convention. Senator Booker also opposed the nomination of David Friedman as US Ambassador to Israel, even while Senator Menendez supported Friedman’s nomination, and NORPAC, Booker’s biggest funder in his Senate race, pushed for his confirmation.

There is no doubt that Senator Booker has made many pro-Israel and pro-Jewish statements and supported bills that would benefit Jews in the United States and around the world. I only wonder if his obvious presidential aspirations are affecting his judgement as he seeks to attract fringe elements in the Democratic party to help him in what is expected to be a lively primary season in the 2020 presidential election campaign.

Some of Senator Booker’s more recent actions, ranging from his support of the Iran Deal, to the recent picture taken with pro-BDS activists, begs the question: who, truly, is Senator Booker a supporter of?

  1. I was a former strong supporter and donor to Senator Cory Booker. NO Longer! He has gravitated away from the Jewish agenda he used to support, now flirting with our enemies as well.

  2. Its about time people are seeing his true colors!!!
I never supported him and always wondered what was it that so many “unzere” fell for him. What did he give them to blind them??? He was so full of himself and no different then all the left wing liberels.

  3. Not a chance I will vote for him again. He supports his party over the USA. There is no way I will support him, Many others will not support him for many reasons especially his detached representation of New Jersey. He votes based on Washington democrats not what is best for us in New Jersey or the USA.

  4. Cory Booker is a perfect example of how dangerous strong liberal & progressive values are & how they can distort seemingly nice people to our communities, basic values & thinking. Cory has shown that playing politics behind the curtain of acting as a passionate voice for acceptance & liberalism can totally destroy ones morals to a point that maybe even subconsciously he doesn’t realize anymore the true meaning behind his actions.

  5. I just find it amazing that seemingly “smart” people continue to fall for these crazy liberals time and time again. Every time they say “No, this guy’s different, he understands our community, he has our back.” When will these”smart” people realize that they must simply take a look at these politicians most basic policies, and not be wowed by a cute speech at a Yeshiva dinner! How gullible are we!?

  6. If any of us in Lakewood, Teaneck or Passaic or wherever any Jew lives in NJ can still vote for this Anti Israel or rather Anti America they are nuts! I never believed he was sincere and always knew that his repeating Torah thoughts etc was just to win over the Jewish vote. Hopefully he has now revealed the TRUE COREY BOOKER!!

  7. Cory Booker is a true Politician, he will say anything that any group wants to hear. He counts on people not paying attention to what he says. What he says to one group could be totally opposite to what he says to another and all that matters is he gets a vote and a donation. We have had time to see his actions and they have nothing to do with what he says.
If you listen to what his latest speeches, he is running for President, be afraid if this man gets that power.

  8. I lost all respect and any hope of him doing anything positive after the conference call he had (before he cast his official vote) to “explain” why he would be supporting Obama’s Iran Deal…

  9. Even the Vaad was fooled—we voted for him—and the first thing he did to thank us was to support Obama’s Iran deal.—He is indeed a scam artist and a dangerous one. Now we have Gov. Murphy, who is MIA due to a few scandals in his administration. One of the signs of the coming of Moshiach is that emes looks like sheker, and sheker looks like emes. It seems that the time is quickly approaching.
