Now that FBI directer James Comey has rendered a recommendation, there are more questions then answers.
While it seems Clinton will get off on the charges leveled against her, Directer Comey’s statement shows she was far from reliable in her handling of classified information. Furthermore do the charges leveled against Clinton not raise questions about Clinton’s trustworthiness and ability to deal with important national security issues?
Clinton as expected by many was cleared of the charges leveled against her but the recommendation by James Comey included a caveat that in his words “this is not to suggest that in similar circumstances, a person who engaged in this activity would face no consequences.” If someone in a similar circumstance would face punishment then this alone should disqualify Clinton from being commander in chief. Directer Comey even raised the possibility that the emails were hacked by foreign enemies of America. This begs the question is this what America is looking for in a commander in chief?
In the short term this non indictment is likely to negatively affect Clinton’s poll numbers. In the long term while this may not cost Clinton the White House, together with The Clinton Foundation scandal and the perception that Clinton is too establishmentarian and too internationalist may indeed further erode Clinton’s credibility with the American people and perhaps the international community as well.
Director Comey raised the suggestion not to indict Clinton. Supporters will point to this as a victory. This is actually no victory at all as it can be argued that Comey suggested Clinton was guilty of gross negligence if not bad intent. Negligence is not what America wants nor needs in a leader. America can and should expect better.
