By S.M. I was recently in another town on business, and noticed a type of stop sign which I think would be a great addition to the town. The stop sign is similar to a regular stop sign but has an addition of several flashing lights around the stop sign, making it more difficult to be missed by motorists.
With the high number of motor vehicle accidents which occur in our town on a daily basis, I think it’s something the township should consider installing.
I believe the signs are run on solar power.
Although there may be a substantial initial investment, I think the benefits would outnumber the disadvantages.
I’ve attached a video of it for readers to see.
wow, i’ve never seen this, it could’nt hurt to try. but the question of course is how much do they cost?
WE need more Traffic Lights not Blinking Stop signs every corner like in Boro Park
The problem in this town is not that people do not see and miss stop signs. They see them but simple choose to ignore them. Adding 10,000 lights will not change someones bad behavior.
It looks like a Christmas Tree….
These would be great, number 3 , u dont know what your talking about, one of the problems in this town is that we pay millions of dollars a year in taxes and lakewood is like southfallsburg in the winter , dark as the black night. We need more lights aroundthis town, its not a little place anymore its a city with almost 100k of people. These flashing stop signs would be a good start
Recession – waste of money – people have to stop at stop signs -it’s pretty basic! we need to stop people from blocking the corners and thereby blocking the stop sign visibility
The town should not have to pay for this- people should pay attention to their surroundings. This is their responsibility as licensed drivers. For the intersections that are actually proven hazardous the town should consider installing traffic lights.
I agree to #2, we need much more traffic lights. Why bash Lakewood drivers? I think they’re much better than NY drivers.
The problem is that our roads were built, and are being built, without keeping in mind that this township has now over 100,000 people, (and will 1 day, not so far in the future, number 300,000+ people.).
We better shape up our road signals and future road development or accident rates will, G’D forbid, reach unprecedented numbers.
every day have one policeman monoter a few stop signs (in an unmarked car). Let him give out tickets and make sure the careless drivers can’t get off the hook. This will teach people to behave. It’s called a LAW.
it only blinks for 5 seconds?
cameras the only solution , when you hit people in the pocket book they will soon learn to “see”
It won’t work. Waste of money. the best way is put 3 or four speed bumps in a graduating in hight as you get closer to the stop sign. Cheaper then blinking stop lights or traffic lights.People will then slow down and stop so they will save lives and money on new front end repairs on their cars.
to #12 – It’s a good idea but, horrible. I never go down 7th past the high school if i can help it, because of all the speed bumps. I hate speed bumps, but, I am one of those careful drivers who doesn’t zoom right past a stop sign and then stop. I stop before stop signs and then proceed with caution.
People need to start paying attention to what is around them. There will never be enough flashing lights to get the attention of people who just don’t care enough to pay attention.
What are you thinking? Lakewood drivers may be better than N.Y. drivers. So what! Many Lakewood drivers only stop when they have to. Unfortunately to many a stop does not mean they have to.The only time they have to is if they are absolutely sure they won’t beat the other car!
That should be a stop sign does not mean they have to.
I agree to some extent on the flashing STOP SIGNS, but it still won’t stop people from eatting stop signs or red lights there’s always an accident waiting to happen. I’m a frequent driver and I see it everyday. Maybe in other places it will work but in Lakewood NEVER!

Are you serious?!?! No way..I am not paying one more cent in taxes for this ridiculous idea! Drivers just need to stop at that big red octogon that spells the word S-T-O-P instead of ignoring it. We do not need to waste the money on this nonsense!
you have got to be kidding, if you don’t know what a octogon shaped red sign with 4 white letters in it mean, then you shouldn’t be driving period.
sorry # 17 didn’t read you post
A Stop sign is much more noticeable if the pole holding it up is coated with reflective material, like the ones at RIdge and East Seventh Street next to Rabbi Gelbwachs’s shul.
In a town where stop signs are considered suggestions by most, I’m afraid that these will become merely flashing suggestions.
Pay attention to your driving and you wont need a light up stop sign.
how about stop praying, texting, and doing what ever it is your doing when you are suppose to be driving your vehicle. Driving is not that complicated. Pay attention and drive.
A stop sign means STOP, just a simple comand that has been around for ages. It DOES NOT mean slow then proceed when you think you can beat the on coming traffic. Plain and Simple, STOP, LOOK, PROCEED WHEN ALL CLEAR. STOP ALL THESE ACCIDENTS!!!!!
