New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently signed into law a bill which would allow illegal immigrants in the state to obtain driver’s licenses. Although the law isn’t especially popular, I believe that the good outweighs the bad and it would be wise for New Jersey to follow in their footsteps and allow illegal immigrants to get driver’s licenses.
Several months ago, a friend of mine was involved in a motor vehicle accident when a driver blew past a red light and T-boned his car. Nobody was hurt, but his vehicle was seriously damaged. Normally, a police report would be filed and insurance billed for repairs. However, the driver who hit him was an illegal immigrant who possessed neither a license nor insurance. Due to the damage to his car, my friend had no choice but to sell it for parts and purchase a new one. In all, he lost thousands of dollars due to being in an accident with an illegal, uninsured driver. Instances like this are the reason why New Jersey should issue licenses to illegal immigrants.
Allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses has several benefits that could give greater peace of mind to drivers, both locally, where there are dozens, if not hundreds of unlicensed illegals driving, and around New Jersey. It would mandate that illegal immigrants receive the same drivers training that everybody else on the road receives.
Of course, even with the required tests that drivers must pass there are still many bad drivers on the road – a casual drive around Lakewood makes that clear. But it would undoubtedly decrease the number of bad drivers on the roads.
It would also cause illegal immigrants to buy car insurance. As I noted before, getting into an accident with an illegal immigrant can wind up costing you far more than with a person who is legal and insured. If New Jersey allows illegal immigrants to obtain a license, getting into an accident with one would be far less of a headache and could save motorists thousands of dollars in otherwise uninsured damages.
While some see giving illegal immigrants drivers licenses as a sort of amnesty, the truth is that it is not and would only help New Jersey citizens.
Driving is Privilege not a right. Illegals shouldn’t have privileges.
He could never meet NJ 6 identification points. Probably wouldn’t have insurance. A license would justify his being here. Why should u justify an illegal. Why should we make it comfortable for him to be here. With out insurance there is no benefit for him to have a license

The guy was registered in md and indeed there was insurance but the insurance was only the bare minimum. The accident involved 3 cars and there was extensive damage.
These guys have no reason to have decent insurance because they have nothing for you to sue. If I CVS”s was involved in an accident with no insurance (or minimal) I would be sued and they could take my house.
So you are correct that these guys having ins is a plus but the fact is that they would have the bare minimum which isn’t much (and that’s assuming that they would have it to begin with)
I have a better idea deport them all. Another thing how would they get six points of ID or would they not have to because democrats hold illegal aliens are more privileged then US citizens. Illegal aliens are criminals by virtue of the fact that entering the US not at a port of entry without proper documentation is illegal.
In NJ we have no-fault insurance which includes coverage for uninsured drivers. Why didn’t your “friends” insurance company, which is responsible for paying for your “friends” damage/loss not pay? Either more to this story or just more fake news to support your “opinion”.

Why are you assuming they will pay hefty insurance premiums just because they obtain a legal driver’s license ? You do realize their premiums will be astronomical because of their illegal status and the fact that they cant even be hired for work since they are illegal…
NJ is a no-fault insurance state. It does not matter whether the other guy is legal/illegal/insured/ininsured. Your insurance company is responsible for your loss. Just more tales about a “friend” to support an opinion.
That is very silly because being here illegally is a crime obviously if they have no problem with being illegal then they will not have a problem doing other criminal acts like driving without a license or insurance so they should collect all these illegals and Deport them.

Illegals don’t care about their victims and it’s society’s fault. It’s a ruination to be part of a society that’s not machshiv law and order. They may be nice people when you interact with them, but what happens when they cause an accident and leave the scene? There’s nothing you can do. Nobody cares to protect your rights, including your right to be compensated for your damages. The only thing you would accomplish by issuing them a driver’s license is bringing them closer to gaining citizenship, which is basically rewarding them for being a poor, discriminated and underprivileged victims of mankind and the ‘evil white race’. This encourages bad behavior and sends a message that you’ll eventually get what you want if you claim victimhood for long enough.
As far as your arguments for the benefits it can bring to regular citizens, that is also wishful thinking, as has been explained here in the comments.
This whole idea is nothing more than a voting grab/scam for the democrats.

I never said that insurance did not cover the extensive damage. What I did say was that it wasn’t the insurance of the guy at fault that covered it.
If your insurance makes up payout for damages even when you’re not at fault that affect your premiums and when it’s a big claim it can be a very big difference in what you pay afterwards.
Not if it is not your fault. Do you mean to say that you pay car insurance premiums for years and when you get into an accident that is the other guy’s fault, your premiums go up? I guess the insurance companies have a good scam going.
This story has more holes in it than Swiss cheese. No fault ins. covers accidents with uninsured drivers. Why lie?
There are 3 states that have special insurance for low income people (some call a dollar a day insurance). The reasoning for it is that since these people won’t be able to afford insurance and not being able to travel will limit their job opportunities therefor they were given a legal way to drive without real insurance. The special policy gives them the right to drive without any liability, it waves them from having legal responsibility. The policy they pay for just covers up to 10K only for neck injuries or death expense (funeral etc). Therefor in these states (NJ MD CA) it is mandatory to have uninsured/under-insured coverage on your policy. In essence we the regular drivers are forced to pay for their liability insurance. The flaw in this is obvious, what if these drivers cause damage to drivers in/from other states.
If your friends car was registered and insured in NJ they should have been covered under his own policy for uninsured motorist (even if he does not car collision coverage).
Regarding giving illegal immigrants drivers licences; most likely won’t help because even if they opt to get insurance they will most likely be eligible for special insurance and won’t be any different than now.
What will be the response of the Lakewood Vaad if and when Governor Murphy supports the issuance of driver licenses to illegals?

My 13 &14 year old can’t wait until they can get the “cell phone bill” drivers license they want to know when the law will be passed
So, they get insurance in order to register their vehicle and then allow it to lapse and…. poof! No more insurance. Just look at L.A. for a model of how well this system is working for them. What a terrible idea.
Aside for the other points made in the comments, this is an invitation for voter fraud.
This is the Democrats first step. Attached to the drivers license is the voter registration form. So without safe guards the illegals will be voting and the Democrats will say it is their right.
Lets all remember this in November and vote all these clowns out before they tax us out of our homes.
At least they will need to pass a driving test & will learn the rules of the road.
